“Amara”

The Amara hotel was a perfect "layover" hotel. It was easy to get to and from the airport. It was close enough to walk to Chinatown. The hotel was very clean and the staff friendly and helpful. I enjoyed the fact that it was not your typical "tourist" hotel. I loved the market across the street and the flavor of the neighborhood.

“A pleasant get-away from Orchard Road”

Very helpful porters and concierge desk staff. However the front desk staff could use some training on guest appreciation techniques - in my experience (this was my second visit) they are monosyllabic, unsmiling, pre-occupied, dismissive almost. Probably the least friendly front desk staff I have come across in Singapore - I don't know why they are like that. The guest rooms are comfortable and light. The Internet service is fast and reliable - IIRC it is supplied by DOCOMO interTouch from Japan. The adjoining mall has some great breakfast spots if you are not signed up for the hotel buffet and the local neighborhood has a pleasant laid back village feel to it - a welcome change of pace from the madness of Orchard Road .

Area recommendations
Little India - the best food in the city and unique shopping opportunities.

“Amara hotel not 4-star.”

The room I requested was non-smoking with twin beds, twice I was sent to rooms with one bed that reeked of smoke. The room was not prepared for two people, there was only one towel. The toiletries were minimal and were not replaced after check-in despite a 2-night stay. The staff were not at all helpful, there was never anyone at the concierge desk, and the reception staff were too busy to answer questions. The location was good, around the corner from the Bugis MRT stop and within an easy walk of Chinatown and the Temple of the Tooth. Note for travelers wanting to use the airport shuttle. It is great for getting into Singapore and not bad at $9 SD, but it does not run the other way unless they have already scheduled a passenger to come specifically to come to your hotel from the airport. The MRT was fast and cheap, and you can take luggage on board.

Area recommendations
Chinatown - great food, wonderful walking streets. Arab Street - incredible shopping, the beautiful Masjid Sultan mosque, amazing choices for food - Turkish, Iranian, Moroccan, Malay, etc. Orchard Road for sheer overwhelming shopping opportunities.
Getting around
We used the MRT the entire time and we're able to get just about everywhere quickly and very inexpensively. There are some areas that are not covered by the MRT, you can pop out and catch a bus though.

“An Exceptional Chinatown Area Hotel In Singapore”

The Amara Singapore is a beautiful, spotlessly clean, well situated, and extremely friendly hotel in the Chinatown section of Singapore. The hotel is a few blocks from two MRT stations, many key tourist spots, superb Hawker (food) courts, and easily accessible from the airport. The public areas and the 6th floor outdoor pool are top notch as are the good sized rooms with all the amenities. Housekeeping was exceptional. However, the most impressive aspect of the hotel was the staff-totally efficient, friendly and genuinely concerned with every aspect of your stay. The Expedia rate made it great value for price. I did not eat in any of the many hotel restaurants as there were numerous less expensive options in the area. My 9th floor room had a fine view, was totally quiet, had comfortable beds, and excellent bath products. While there are more extracagant hotels in Singapore, this is an excellent reasonably proced alternative.

Area recommendations
Singapore was planned (and still is organized) into ethnic enclaves: Chinatown, Little India, the Malay-Muslim sector, the central business district, the European section, etc. Your choice of neighborhoods depends on your interests but I loved the Chinatown section where the Hawker Centers (incredible meals for six dollars), the various temples and sites, and the amazing markets were great. However, all neighborhoods have attarctions--my least favorite to stay would be along the Riverfront as it is extremely toristy (touts soliciting you to eat at mediocre restaurants, etc.). However, rest assured you will feel absolutely safe anywhere you go in Singapore and will never be accosted by individuals begging or unreasonably intruding into your space. And the MRT will take you effortlessly anywhere you wish to go in the country.
Must see
Among the must see attractions: (1) Buddha Tooth Relic Temple; (2) Singapore National Museum; (3) Asian Civilizations Museum; (4) the various WWII sites including the Natioanl Cemetery; and St. Andrew's Cathedral. I would strongly recommend taking as many of the Walking Tour (Chinatown, Little India, Time of Empire, End o Empire, etc.) as they are incredibly well done.

“Not impressed”

I was expected lit more because of hotel positioning & visitors review. In fact i met not so plesant guy on reception while checking-in. My flight back was at 2 a.m. so i requested for late check-out, the same guy gave time just till 2 p.m. - it didn't help me.

Traveler's tip
near the hotel, just right the way to subway station, there is a good food court. good choice & price

Chinatown, Singapore: Chinatown is a maze of streets packed with colorful pre-war shophouses selling bric-a-brac, clothing, antiques and Chinese herbs. Visit Chinatown Heritage Center, see the ornamental Sri Mariamman Hindu temple, or hop on a trishaw for a tour.
