“Outstanding Hotel in a great location”

The hotel was beautiful and although they over-booked themselves for the room type we reserved on Expedia, they gave us a free upgrade. The only complaints are that the Internet charges are rather high compared to others (over S$25) and when our flight was delayed and we needed to stay an extra night, they wanted to charge almost double the nightly cost we were currently paying even if we moved back down to the room type we had originally reserved. Bottom line is that it was a great hotel in a great location in the Raffles area, but they are more concerned about making money than taking care of customers.

Getting around
The MRT is the best means of getting around the city to for all the main areas from Raffles, Orchard Road, Marina Bay, Clarke/Boat Quay, Sentosa, airport and even pretty close to the zoo. Taxi's are a little expensive, but metered and accepts credit cards.
Shopping
The entire city of Singapore is a giant high-class shopping center, but the prices in almost every store is more than what you would pay in the states or through an online storefront.

“Superb location and amenities”

The Fairmont is in the heart of Raffles City area in Singapore--the location is near everything--including taxis, buses, attractions, museums, casino, mall is part of the hotel--eating downstairs in the mall is terrific--getting spa treatments is easy, hair salons are easy--Starbucks is in the mall also, etc.

Area recommendations
So much to see in Singapore--have a Singapore Sling in Raffles Hotel across the street, ride the Singapore Flyer, take the City Tour and city hop the stops at the Botanical Garden, the Orchard malls, the Museum, the Flyer, Chinatown, Little India. It's all possible in a short visit, and it's fun. The ION Center is the newest mall on Orchard and has "hawker stands" for eating in their food court--really great--try it.
Outdoors or beach
Take a short, one hour flight to Penang, Malaysia. From there take a short cab ride to Batu Ferringi (the beach). Look up ShangriLa hotels--there are two there. Both are resorts and very nice, relaxing and comfortable--also, not too expensive! You'll have a beautiful, relaxing time!

“Fairmont SG is so so”

The fairmonts usually have exceptional service. This one in Sg not so much. The customer service at the front desk, the presidents club desk was very average. I had made a few requests on my arrival, which were lost. The staff was difficult to communicate with . And even at the presidents club desk, they gave a very poor reception. It didnt feel warm at all. Not sure if I would pay so much and go back to this fairmont.

“Bad Coordination”

We got to the hotel at 1900 pm, but they said that we had to wait another hour before we could get into our rooms. I find this ludricous, as we were on a one night transit in Singapore and we had an early flight the next day plus my young children were with me. We had to ask for a senior member of the staff to sort things out as the receptionist was not helpful at all, and told us to just wait in the lobby and as soon as they have done cleaning they would inform us. Their reason for this is because they are fully booked. I thought when hotels are fully booked then there would be no late checkouts and it is not as if we were there at 1400 in the afternoon, it was already 1900!! Though they gave us an upgrade, the showers in the upgraded room was bad. What a painful experience

“Maybe a 3.5 stars but no more...”

To start a few reasons why I picked this hotel was the location (the subway is in the mall underneath/next to the hotel) and also after reading other reviews. The lobby is amazing and the check-in was smooth staff was very welcoming. However once you get in the elevators and go to your floor, I was not impressed at all. The doors are all wooden/worn appear very dated. The room is carpeted and was worn with stains, and in the corners there were dust bunnies there. Once I got over the non-modern/chic appeal of the room, the bed was very comfortable and the bathroom was clean/nice. Not modern enough for my american tastes, especially at the cost of a room Nicer accommodations in Bangkok for half the price. Although in the hotels defense I must say that I found compared to other countries in Asia, Singapore is one of the most expensive. Also, don't go to the pool bar or restaurants in the area, the service is horrible and it's probably due to the GST and the service charge (5-20%) they add to your bill, so no incentive to give good service. The saving grace was the LOCATION, to the subway, and it went straight to the airport. Overall I was happy to have a clean room and close location, but would not stay here with my husband again. Not worth the costs incurred.

Area recommendations
Downtown is more business geared but is great because of the location to the subway. That is what makes this area fantastic.

“Great location,value, service and cleanliness”

The Fairmont is located very centrally and the MRT (subway train) stations are right below and so is the Raffles City Mall with it's excellent food court. The service was friendly and the rooms very clean. The hotel should provide free wifi access in the rooms rather than at the lobby alone though. Stay in the South Tower rooms - they are far better than the North Tower!

“Great hotel, great location, one nasty problem...”

First, I travel quite a bit around the world and have for over 20 years. The Fairmont is overall a first-class hotel in a first-class location, exit right into the huge Raffles City shopping mall, a few steps to the convention center if that's in your plans, a short cab ride to most major points of interest in Singapore. Now the problem. The toilet just stopped working, push, no flush. Ok these things can happen but this was a conference and apparently was true throughout the building. It was fixed and happened again the next day, and the next, every day seemed to be a few hours without toilet flushing. I checked out (8 day stay) and had a midnight flight so used their hospitality suite (definitely ask about this if you come too early or leave late) and guess what, the toilet didn't flush! Push, nothing. All that might be more forgivable but every time I reported it it was as if this was the first and only time, really??? We'll look into it! When I pointed out it happened over and over and to many other guests: Stony silence, "we'll look into it sorry". I'd've been happier if they just said they had some major problem in the buidling, sorry, and sent up a fruit basket (whatever) but acting like I was the only one and this was the only time is a bit offensive. But it's probably all fixed now so enjoy this lovely hotel. Some rooms have balconies, ask! And some elevator floors open right into the mall or restaurants.

Area recommendations
Visit Raffles' "Long Bar" right across the street from the Fairmont for a "sling" (no need to say "Singapore"!) Go to the Ku Da Tay bar at the top of the Marine Sands, that huge boat-looking thing on top of three towers, you'll see it from in front of the Fairmont. Then check out the casino in the basement, the noodle restaurant in the casino isn't bad and very reasonably priced. If you like looking at computer gear try Funan Digital Life about 3 blocks walk (you can probably get there without going out of doors) from the Fairmont, it's three or four floors of almost all computer stores or related (digital cameras, games etc.) The zoo was great, Night Safari, a nighttime zoo, is on the same grounds. I went to the zoo in the afternoon, had some dinner, then walked over to Night Safari and stayed until midnight. It can be quite a "zoo" on a Saturday night though clears up towards 9pm as families go home. Some of the "quays" (nearby waterfronts) have great restaurants and bars, I forget the names but the concierge or a guidebook can help. The Newtown Hawker Center is outdoor food and very interesting, very casual, popular with locals, try an oyster omelet and chili stingray or whatever suits you. Chijmes, right across the street from Fairmont, is a complex of bars and restaurants, "Insomnia"'s live bands go until 5AM most nights.
Getting there
From Boston it didn't really matter much which way I went, east or west. I went through London. It's a long flight, 6 1/2 hours to London then 13 1/2 hours to Singapore. All flights were packed. Singapore is quite strict about bringing some items in. I brought some packages of cigars so I could have my own brand and declared them, tobacco must be declared. They charged me about SG$22 and were very pleasant about it. Collect your GST ("VAT", "Sales Tax") refund materials when you purchase things and get your refund on the way out. It's a two step process at Changi airport, once before security and again inside security where they hand you your refund in cash. Remember that the refund will be in Singapore bills and you're on your way out! Spend it right there or be prepared to exchange it or use it next time you're in Singapore.
Getting around
I found cabs quite reasonable even for short hops though getting somewhere might be easier than getting back because there'll be free cabs waiting at the hotel but once you're in a neighborhood for example it may become difficult to find a free cab. Persistence and asking locals for a good place to get a cab back will usually solve it. Miles and miles of underground walkways which are malls in themselves connect the huge shopping malls such as Raffles City and Suntech, you never have to go outdoors which can be nice on a very hot and humid day tho you have to be willing to walk.
What to pack
Singapore is hot and humid and locals told me I was lucky to be there when it was "cool"! Pack summer wear and prepare for lots of changes of clothing, at least day and night.
Dining
In general the food is not nearly as spicy hot as names might suggest (e.g., Chili Crab) so unless you're very sensitive to some heat you'll probably be happy. Be careful of little bowls of relish or condiments served on the side, they might be quite spicy but also quite optional. Service in general is exceedingly gracious and attentive particularly in better restaurants. Even if you're frustrated by something smile and explain politely. Tho I recommend the bars in Chijmes the one restaurant I ate at there was ok but really quite boring. If you want to eat local to the hotel stay in the mall, food court downstairs or upstairs for fancier restaurants.
Nightlife
Ku da tay bar on the top of the Marine Sands hotel, the quays (waterfront) areas. The bar on the 70th floor of the nearby (walk thru Raffles City) Sofitel, Raffles Hotel Long Bar, "Insomnia" bar in the Chijmes complex right across the street from the Fairmont usually has a live band until 5AM.
