Smolyan is set in a popular part of Bulgaria, a part of the world known for its rural landscapes, beaches and wetlands.

Sofia, which is the national capital, is situated 100 miles (161 kilometers) northwest of Smolyan.

Why don't you spend some time exploring the area? Start with a visit to the the Smolyan Ski Resort.

Savvy travelers often use Smolyan as a base for further explorations. This much-loved region is blessed with numerous terrific natural and man-made attractions. Head 10 miles (16 kilometers) south from Smolyan to Chepelare, where you can visit the Chepelare Ski Resort and Pamporovo Ski Resort.

Approximately 40 miles (64 kilometers) to the north of Smolyan is Plovdiv, a regional city where you can explore Saint Marina Church, Plovdiv Stadium and Dzhumaya Mosque. Plovdiv Amphitheatre, Hristo Botev Stadium and Bachkovo Monastery are other good spots to visit.

If the weather keeps you indoors, take a trip to Bulgaria's history museums. This area is popular for its range of ruins; these are fascinating portals into the region's rich past.

Make the most of the wisdom of the locals and take one of the winery tours and city walking tours. No vacation is complete without some rest and recuperation. Sunbathing is one of the activities they do to relax here and bird watching is another.
