“A great hotel if you have a car”

This hotel is lovely with a wonderful staff. American travelers should note they do not all speak English. Breakfast is a generous version of the typical German variety. A small bar in the lobby serves drinks and light snacks. Our room was enormous, very clean and included a sitting area and small balcony. It's a green hotel so they use eco friendly materials including hardwood floors in the rooms which are great fun to slide around on in your socks! There were also surprise little touches like an adjustable couch, adjustable beds and a bottle of mineral water. The location and therefore drive up to hotel was a bit lacking if you're expecting a cute little German town. The hotel itself is quite modern, simple and lovely. But it was initially a bit of a let down to find that it's located behind a gas station in the industrial outskirts of town. You want to be driving a car if you stay here. The nearest tram stop is a kilometer away and there is a rather sad, rundown area between the hotel and downtown 4km away. There is little of interest within walking distance. The exceptionally friendly woman at the front desk recommended a steak house nearby called Chariwari where we had the hands down the best meal of the entire trip (and we had a LOT of great meals in our three weeks). Pperfectly cooked steaks, veggies, sides on all counts (they use a lava stone grill) and perfectly "gemütlich" atmosphere. We had a rental car so greatly enjoyed our stay here and would stay again.

Area recommendations
The altstadt or old town area is postcard adorable. The outskirts not so much. This is a real university town so it's very bicycle friendly. There is a great public park on a hill to the south of the old town (within a few minutes walk) that has lovely walking trails and a funicular to the top of the hill so you can look down on a decent view of the city. Be wary of the numerous parking garages around the old town if you have other parking options. 4 hours cost us 8 euros, ouch!
Must see
If you're there New Year's Eve - Locals light fireworks and blast music in the streets of the city center for hours. It's a lot of fun but watch out for stray rockets ricocheting off carss or landing on your head!
