Springfield Vacations

As the longtime home of Abraham Lincoln and the capital of Illinois, this city has ample history, culture and entertainment for any visitor.

Before he moved to the White House, Abraham Lincoln lived and raised his family in Springfield. Visit the capital of Illinois to immerse yourself in the history of one of America's most famous presidents and experience the bustling cultural scene.

Dive into the life and career of the 16th president at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum. This state-of-the-art institution is one of the country’s most visited presidential libraries. It includes fascinating exhibits focusing on the American Civil War.

Before he became president, Lincoln earned his nickname of "Honest Abe" while working as a lawyer. Tour his offices at the Lincoln-Herndon Law Office. Just a few steps away is the Old State Capitol, where Lincoln served in the Illinois House of Representatives and addressed the issue of slavery in his famous "House Divided" speech.

See where the Lincolns lived for 17 years at the Lincoln Home National Historic Site. The home features tours and informational exhibits. The surrounding four blocks have been preserved to appear as they did when Lincoln lived there. Lincoln's final resting place is in Oak Ridge Cemetery where there are also Vietnam War, Korean War and World War II memorials.

On the cultural side, take advantage of Springfield's arts community. Catch an act at Sangamon Auditorium, a venue that hosts a variety of talent ranging from international musicians to the local ballet troupe. For more music, dance and theater performances, stop by Hoogland Center for the Arts, which also features a large gallery. During warmer months, the Theatre in the Park at New Salem hosts plays and concerts in its unique outdoor amphitheater space.

Cool off at Knight's Action Park water slides. Test your swing at the golf range or your skills at the arcade. The Route 66 Drive-in is beloved for its old-fashioned theater; watch a double feature from the comfort of your car.

Fly into the Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport just north of the city and then enjoy history and culture in Springfield, the land of Lincoln.
