not professional at early AM check-in

Posted Feb 22, 2015
Pros: nothing
Cons: improved early morning check-in procedure so reception desk people are not making cash money to put in their pockets
Location: Fridays restaurant around the corner
many flights arrive Colombo airport in early AM -- 2AM-4AM; so you arrive hotel very early. although rooms are ready hotel reception tells you must wait in lobby until about 6AM. But if you pay a fee, in cash, you can go directly to your room. They got me for $60.00 cash (telling me the credit card machine was not working). Everything in the hotel is over-priced compared with other downtown Colombo hotels.

Grand hotel showing signs of age

Posted Aug 23, 2014
Pros: Spacious
Cons: Bathrooms need an upgrade Get rid of the pests roaming outside of the hotel (police job!).
Location: On the seafront (if you could get to it through the road works). Close to the Fort Railway Station and the Dutch Hospital (for food not treatment).
My wife and I stayed for two nights, an found the hotel perfectly acceptable but the rooms need an update (particularly the bathrooms). It would appear to be favoured by the Muslim community, so the bar area was rather dull (and lacking in customers). Food was OK, with a wide choice of buffet for all meals. For dinner, the nearby Dutch Hospital is a far better option but be sure to book. For a 5 star hotel the wine list in the coffee shop is pathetic (a reasonable range of wines are cited, but most are unavailable!).The area around the hotel is under renovation, with seemingly no consideration for tourists/local pedestrians. The hotel has notices warning of touts trying to pick up tourists outside the hotel and convince to go on visits, shopping trips, etc. Their opening line is invariably that they work for the hotel (a lie). This is followed by "where are you from" and, low and behold, wherever you state they have family members there (another lie).

Nice hotel but not four stars

Posted Aug 16, 2014 on Hotels.com
Room was clean but had moldy smell. Staff were generally helpful but often inept. For instance, I paid for my lodging on-line and showed front desk my receipt at check in. But when I checked out, staff charged my stay to my credit card. I had to have credit card company investigate to finally get this resolved. Breakfast buffet was very nice and expansive.

Great location and interior

Posted Mar 31, 2014
Pros: Location, welcome choices for meals in a number of restaurants
Location: Right on esplanade opposite old Parliament house, 5 minutes walk to main station. Taxis and tuk tuks there all the time
Made very welcome and taken to a room at 9.00 a.m. and given explanation of facilities. Given complimentary upgrade on top floor with view to water. A magnificent arrangement of flowers in room on return in afternoon.

Great service, but a run-down hotel

Posted Dec 11, 2013 on Hotels.com
I can't say too much as I'm not familiar with the area and didn't venture out of the hotel. I can saw I was disappointed with the condition of the hotel, it was quite run-down. However, the service was very good - everyone went above and beyond to make the stay comfortable.
