“Not Bad if you like Isolation”
The Renaissance was not bad, if you like Isolation from shops, sights, and activities on St. Croix. The taxi union holds fares at unreasonable rates, so rent a car if you plan on moving about on the island. The first room we were assigned in the Renaissance had the structural evidence of the on-line pictures but was worn, dated and full of mildew. After an unsuccessful attempt by me (female) at getting our room changed, my husband was able to pal around with the manager and get us moved to a room that was not going to give us lung disease, although still worn and dated. Food is available, but menu is limited. They have the BEST french fries anywhere and be sure to tip the pool waiter, Jason, handsomely as he goes out of his way for good service. We signed up with an Expedia package which the Renaissance refused to recognize (kids eat free) and we paid a higher room rate AND for the kids meals - so we will NOT be back to this resort and are still trying to get this resolved. So much for a stress free vacation.
“Rain forest hideaway”
This hotel is on the North shore in a rain forest setting. It is peaceful and gorgeous and the staff is very friendly and accomodating.
“Old weary, moldy, broken down, not marriot quality”
Location is nice, but the Rooms are in a broken down building, badly maintained. Mold all over the Balcony area,Most of the woodwork eaten away by termites somewhat dusty inside the room. Barely basic toilet and shower. Felt like living in 3rd world country. This is not what you expect from a very high priced Marriott room. Very dissatisfied. Barely one Star hotel.Would not recommend to any one.
“Wlll not return. Hotel food staff and maid service was beyond rude and hateful.”
Eating at the hotel is awful. The staff is completely inept. Bringing wrong food and not apologizing saying 'just eat it'. The take an hour to bring a drink or food. And it is wrong and cold when it does arrive. We ordered.room servicelate one night. She had to make threetrips to keep trying to get the order correct. It never was correct and we were charged much more than we should have. The next morning, we have the do not disturb sign on the door Nd the housekeeper starts bsnging and yelling 'housekeeping'. We jump out of bed and are forced out of our room so she could clean at her convenience (9 am). Then she has the audacity to berate us about not setting the food tray out the door. I e plainer that we called to have it picked up. But they never picked it up. She yelled and s older us. Then she set it on the outside patio. That Trey wS not picked up for 3 more days., even tho we called three more times begging for someone to pick up the tray. There were cats everywhere who helped themselves to what was left kn the gray in th middle of the night. I ordered a pinot grigio glass of wine at the bar, the bar tender served me a horrible glass of Chardonnay and told me to just drink it and he charged me for this. We will never stay at this hotel again. We would not recommend this hotel to anyone.
“Best hotel on the island!”
Rental car is a must at this location.
“Heaven on St. Croix”
I've been coming here for years. It is heaven. It is quiet, the rooms are great, the ocean is right there, no tours or roads going by, just the sounds of the ocean. No tall hotels, but instead small bungalows. Each room has a porch where you can sit and read or sleep, you can dive right off the beach, and the food is great. It is a bit isolate from the rest of the island and taxis are expensive (as are car rentals) but just go there and stay and forget the world.
“I could live here”
Check in at Carambola wasn't very streamlined. It took a little while to get the process underway. We were given a lower level room, and didn't realize that until be made the approx 100 yard walk to it. Then had to turn around and go back to correct. Overall, not a big deal.. but I think they could work on the check in process. I overheard another couple saying "you don't have bell service?" - although I think that was temporary. When most of us just get there, we're not on "island time" yet.. so we want to get in & taken care of quickly. We stayed in one of the rennovated units & really LOVED it! The pull out sofa was great for the kids (5 & 6 years old). If you've got older kids & are looking for more mom & dad privacy - it may not work for you. But it was a great fit for our family. Beautiful! The pool was gorgeous!!! Looked like they had brand new chaise lounges and other furniture from Frontgate. Looked like it was out of a magazine photo shoot. The beach was amazing! You do have to walk down I'd say 400 ft-ish to get to the swimming section of beach. But we didn't mind that. The waves are a blast, but can get pretty big some days. We didn't let our kids out in them a few days because they were so high. Finally, keep in mind that Carambola is "out of the way". It will take you about 30 min drive to get to town. This is great for seperation and peace - but you'll get tired of driving if you want to hit town everyday. We had a wonderful stay & would recommend it highly!
“A True Island Wedding”
Carambola Beach resort was truly beautiful. The staff was very accomodating. We were married on the beach by Capt. Gordon Cameron, of Bigbeards, who did a fabulous job. We could not have had a better time.
“Wonderful stay on St. Croix”
This resort is in a nice secluded area, not crammed in with the other resorts, casino, and such. That being said, you'll definitely want a rental car to get around and see the island. They are in the process of renovating since Renaissance just took it over so about half of the buildings were complete when we were there. The room was clean, comfortable, and a joy to stay in. The beach is technically public but there were only resort guests there (we were there in the off season) though we were told that other people come for the Friday night party. The food was good though not vegetarian friendly according to the menu. The chef would fix something vegetarian for us but you didn't know what you were going to get. I would definitely recommend going to the grocery if you get the room with a fridge even though the prices are much higher than in the US.
“Work in progress”
My wife and I took this trip for our 15th anniversary. It was our first vacation alone since our honeymoon. Long overdue. I knew that the resort had recently re-opened and had some renovation going on. Beautiful location, beach was fantastic, very relaxed atmosphere, and the staff was very friendly. A water pipe broke the second day, right before dinner time. My wife and I had to go to our anniversary dinner a bit rough looking. A day at the beach and pool made us both feel a bit gross at dinner, but still had a good time. The power went out twice, early the next morning and knocked out the alarm clock. Overslept a bit, but luckily did not miss any things we had planned. Overall, I would recommend this resort. The rooms that had been renovated looked wonderful, and the rest of the resort is fantastic. A nice, quiet location was what we were looking for. That is exactly what we got.
