“Highly recommend this hotel!”

I was very happy with my stay and recommend this hotel to anyone else. They gave me a beautiful room, without my asking, that faced St. John's harbour and had a queen bed. Everything was very good - clean, nice room, etc. The staff were friendly, polite, and helpful. They called cabs for me and the wake up calls were on time.

Area recommendations

Any area is great in St. John's, but downtown does have some benefits since restaurants are nearby and the harbour is quite picturesque. However, the downtown does not offer many useful services like grocery stores or pharmacies and I had to take a walk outside of the downtown to find a Dominion which doubles for a pharmacy. No malls or department stores are in the downtown area. You will only find expensive boutique shops and restaurants. The downtown is really an over priced entertainment area. You'll spend more (double) on dinner than in Boston, MA, which is expensive anyway and the food is not as good as in Boston. On an ocean island, you would at least expect seafood to be cheaper or reasonably priced, but it is very expensive! The downtown needs to improve on these aspects; more affordable restaurants are needed and those that are fine dining need to tone down their prices; also, more useful shopping would actually be a draw. However, it is a very quaint and safe downtown with lots of historical east coast charm because many dwellings are there. I characterize St. John's as a friendly version of Switzerland.

Outdoors or beach

Take a drive out to Portugal Cove and around the coast of Newfoundland. The ocean scenery is beautiful and you can find a restaurant with a view of the ocean (like Atlantica). Look for whales and other sea going animals.

“Hotel All Right”

Hotel was not ready for us at 5 p.m. so had to wait until after we came back later that evening at 11:00 p.m. to register. Offered us a place to freshen up. One desk ladie was ot particular helpful: however the other one was very helpful the next day. Other than staying at the hotel mostly to sleep it was fine.

Traveler's tip

the new "Room" Museum in St. John's is very good as is the rious coves and beaches etc. in and around St. John's. The weather was subperb which added to the wonderful stay.

If you want to be in the heart of downtown St. John's then this is a great place to stay. Walking distace to many attractions, shops, restaurant's and pubs.
