“Once it was a great hotel”

The biggest advantage of the hotel is that it is situated in the most picturesque part of the island. If you go to the any local crafts’ store in Barbados, you'll see Bathsheba's landscape on many items with the probability of 9/10. The hotel is located on the cliff, and it has the best view from the restaurant. The restaurant although was not the best, the cook was very lazy there. It is usually open till 7pm but when we came once at 6:30pm the waitress said that the cook had already gone home and she did not take our order. General impression is that nobody was taking care of the hotel for a long time, but the rooms were clean and the pool was open. On the East of the Barbados there are just two hotels and this is not a popular tourist spot because there are no beaches suitable for swimming there. Probably that is why the hotel was half empty and not well maintained. But Bathsheba was a great green village; it was a good place to feel some taste of Barbados. We were travelling by local bus to the beach every day. It was fun ride, like roller-coaster ride through the jungle. Also we liked the people, most of them were very friendly, all spoke good English, and it was easy to travel through the country. But note that the prices for everything there are double of those in the US. The bus is cheap the rest is very expensive.

Area recommendations
Travel by local bus it is cheap although not very reliable when you go from Bridgetown to Bathsheba.

“"Breath taking views"”

The hotel is older and out the way and could definitely use some TLC but the view and the peace and quiet made the comfort issues bearable. There is a wonderful park down the beach with a quaint little bar where you can hang out on Sunday's and have a blast. The hotel is on the remote side of the island but for a $1 you can catch a bus into town. Just be careful if you are taking the bus to be back by nightful because its very dark and there is no lighting on the trail back to the hotel. The hotel staff was friendly and they corrected an issue I had with my shower as soon as the maintenance guy came in. The hotel restaurant keeps strange hours so you are forced to eat really early or walk down to the Round House who has great food, great service, and a beautiful view. I can say I got what I went for peace and quiet and I felt safe at the hotel. If you are going to participate in activities this is not the hotel of choice unless you are renting a car.

Getting around
Bus is nearby and only a $1 US but remember their buses have no capacity limit so they can get pretty crowded

“Very Quiet Area”

We found the east coast to be very quiet, compared to the west coast of Barbados. If you are looking for some real rest and relaxation, this is the place to stay. All of the people were very nice and very helpful in helping you get around the Island. Definatley not the place to stay if you like to be active all the time. Go to the west coast for that.

Getting around
Take the bus, it is only $1.00 US and usually runs every hour.

“Can't wait to return !”

The hotel was exactly what I expected from reading the reviews. The view was incredible ! My boyfriend is a surfer and we couldn't have been at a better spot. The staff was pleasant and wanted to meet your needs. The hotel was quiet and that was just what we were looking for. The beach is not crowded at all. We are looking to return next year !

Area recommendations
Bathsheba is beautiful. It is not commercialized and nature at its best. We rented a car and visited different areas on the island. Oistins had a great fish dinner which was very inexpensive.

“Would definitely stay at this hotel again”

Spent a weekend at the hotel. The room was clean. Didn't like the twin beds because they were in fixed positions and could not be brought together. The continental breakfast met our needs. We were gone during the day and the meal in the evening was excellent. Our room overlooked the ocean. The hotel is in a quiet location and if you wanted to travel around the island you would need a car or you could get taxi service which would be more expensive I think. I have stayed at different hotels in Barbados and this was excellent for the price. If you are looking for peace and tranquility, The New Edgewater is definitely the place to be. The beach on this side of the island and around the hotel is not ideal for swimming! I would definitely visit this hotel again!

“Great but eating was a problem...”

The property was what we were expecting and the staff was wonderful. However there is nothing to do at night. Nothing. The bar/restaurant closes at 8pm and the last order had to be in by 7pm. We almost felt like we were back in college living in the dorms and had to make it to the cafeteria before they closed. The food was good but I would have liked a little more selection. I think there should be a menu of items that are served at anytime or at least a little later. Like flying fish sandwiches, hamburgers, salads, etc. We were not always in the mood for a nice sit down dinner. I think this is important because there is no where else to get food past 8pm on the entire east side of the island. If you arrived back to the hotel at 8pm or later you were screwed and couldn't get any food or drink. I know the hotel prides it's self on being quiet but i think opening the bar and having something available to eat until at least 10pm would be a good change.

“Just what I needed”

My stay in Barbados was perfect. I need to travel on a modest budget, and the New Edgewater single-handedly allowed me to visit the island. Between a steal of a rate promotion on Expedia and a startling but welcomed upgrade upon check-in, I couldn't ask for more. I have two "must haves" when I travel to the Caribbean: A/C that stays cool in my room, bugs that stay out. New Edgewater had a solid air conditioner that I could control by remote, and the only pest in my room was me. While it's true that it appears as if the property is undergoing renovations and can look better when it's finished, I got way more than I paid for. The cleaning lady was friendly to me, and the hostesses at breakfast were great to talk to as well. Erica was a ray of sunshine at the front desk: beautiful, friendly, and so helpful. I did not go in the pool, but it looks like a treat. I can't say enough about the view, so I'll just say this: for the entire time I was there, I was exactly where I wanted to be.

“We'll be back....”

This hotel was older but had a lot of character. It may not appeal to some who are looking for more modern accommodations. It was very clean and comfortable. The staff here was very welcoming and friendly. We had a wonderful experience.

Area recommendations
We loved staying on the East Coast (Atlantic Ocean). It is the more remote part of the island where you are not far from the local people/residences. The quietness and beauty of the island was remarkable in this area in October.
Getting around
You need a rental car if you want to go anywhere away from the hotel area.
Must see
The Flower Forest was a rewarding tourist attraction. A definite must see on the Northern East Coast.

“Faded Grandeur”

Pros: Spacious, elegant 40s design; hand-carved mahogany built-ins mixed with modern wicker furniture. Lush rural setting, awesome ocean views, hikeable to everything in the tiny village. Charming cool-temp swimming pool with constant fountain, lovely deck. Open air dining and birdwatching. Bar with ice and TV. Complimentary breakfast, tasty grilled meals. Very reasonable prices in low season 2010 (dinner for two could be $US30, extra person in room $US12.50, fancy Sunday brunch $US35 per person). We stayed five nights and loved it as a quiet retreat. Cons: Has suffered from weather and poor maintenance (chipped or missing tiles, windows rusted shut or leaking, doors stuck, corrosion on fixtures). Poor reading lights, hard pillows. Internet somehow never available ("That laptop is being used for brunch"). Not a modern spa experience, but full of character and goodwill.

Area recommendations
Bathsheba is a picturesque rural village on a steep hillside with no signage, no taxis, no take-out, one tiny grocery store, two tiny churchs, two hotels, one other restaurant, and three or four watering holes. Traffic consists of a couple of wandering goats on the main road at midday. Buses to elsewhere run every hour. We spotted osprey, mongeese, chickens and monkeys around town. "Soup Bowl" at Bathsheba is an internationally famous surfing spot (we saw the National Surfing Championship) but bring your own equipment. it's not generally good for swimming because of coral, currents, and big surf. That's why we loved the Edgewater's pool so much. Don't step barefoot on sea urchin spines on the beach! The Andromeda Botanic Garden on the far side of the village was a highlight of our trip for plants and birds. It also has a lovely gift shop with art, books, and refreshments. We enjoyed an expensive, exquisite meal at the beautifully renovated Atlantis Hotel as well as an early Sunday service at St. Aidan's Anglican church. We also took the Speightstown bus and got off at Farley Hill/Grenade Forest/Barbados Nature Preserve in the hills to see wild monkeys and views. Speightstown is a rundown but colorful fishing village, a taxi ride from the gorgeous restored St Nicolas Abbey great house and working sugar plantation. So staying at the Edgewater without a car didn't keep us from sightseeing.

“Always happy to return to this property :)”

I had a perfectly lovely room and view - Erica graciously accommodated in the celebration of my 50th - thank you so very much ! My view made for absolutely breathtaking photos that remind me just how much I look forward to returning . There was a lovely deck and sitting room to practice yoga as a plus . I am a bit of a picky eater and the chefs provided extra soup, vegetables, and fresh fish - ty chef(s) :D Rooms was clean and linens provided daily . This hotel is a small slice of Barbadian history , so those who find disappointments must be looking for a different experience . I can find nothing to complain about . ~~~~ Returning with a smile ~~~~~ !

Area recommendations
The trip to Bridgetown for live jazz and fresh salad at the Waterfront Art cafe was most enjoyable. Don't be afraid of a bus ride to Speightstown for the markets , and sightseeing.
