sonesta great bay

Posted Jan 30, 2015
Pros: beach and pool
Cons: rooms need an upgrade. AC is tough to adjust
location is outstanding. while the room is a little tired, you do not need to be inside as the beach and pools are great. hotel staff is outstanding once they warm to you which is as easy as smiling and saying good morning. small tips go a long way and are earned by hard workers. Germain in the restaurant will keep you laughing. Agatha at check in is a pro especially with issues. Abel serves drinks with laughs and Nigel is a fun bartender at the beach bar. Short walks into town are healthy safe and enjoyable. Book oceanfront if you can as the rooms are quieter, served better, and you wake up looking at sunrise over a mountain top cascading into bay and beach. non oceanfront is noisy.

Beach Getaway

Posted Jan 27, 2015
Pros: Close proximity to the beach, good food, friendly staff and the fact that we did not have to dress up for dinner.
Cons: It would be good if there were more umbrellas with the beach and pool chairs; we had to get up early and "reserve" our chairs to enjoy an umbrella.
Location: The resort is within easy walking distance to Phillipsburg and shopping and offers information on water sports and island tours.
The Sonesta Great Bay in St. Maarten is an excellent beach getaway. This is the second year that I have visited with friends and we specifically like the smaller facility (dining, beach and pools in close proximity to the room), the location of the facility (easy walking distance to shopping), the friendly staff (Nigel at the outdoor bar and Denroy who taught water aerobics). The resort has four restaurants and no reservations are required. Twice during the week the buffet was moved outdoors for poolside dining which was nice. There were also vendors that came twice during the week to sell merchandise near the pool deck. The food is plentiful and excellent. It would be nice if they had more beach chairs with umbrellas; in order to get an umbrella we had to get up early and "reserve" our chairs. Entertainment was fun but pretty standard for an all-inclusive (although I did really enjoy the acrobatics act near the end of our stay). Overall I think the resort was very nice for the money.

Hotel très bien situé

Posted Jan 26, 2015

Don't Stay Here

Posted Jan 24, 2015
Cons: Security-Parking, Room Safe
The location was excellent. Not all of the dining options were open everyday. Some days there was only one option for the entire resort. The food was bland at best and always the wrong temperature (i.e. food that was supposed to be hot was cold and vice versa). Our room did not look like the pictures and was rundown. The safe did not have a lock on it. We had to put our name on a waiting list to receive a lock, which we were granted the evening before our check-out. The staff was rude. The hotel parking lot was always full so we had to park our car down the street in an unmarked, unlit lot.

Great Place to Vacation

Posted Jan 22, 2015
Pros: The location to town, the beach, the activities, the staff, all inclusive, Adults only.
Cons: The staff at the front desk was confused about the laundry facilities. They could do more about scheduling and knowledge of the facilities.
Location: There are all kinds of things to meet every ones interest. They have flyers for different events in the patio area by the pool with an agent to help.
This was our 4th year in a row to stay at the Sonesta Great Bay Resort. It is an adults only resort where you can enjoy a vacation without the irresponsible parents who turn their children loose on everyone else. It's an all inclusive resort where the food is great and plenty of available restaurant space to enjoy it. They have different food events on different nights on the patio. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The view of the beach on Great Bay is fantastic where you can see the cruise ships come in. There is entertainment on most nights. The resort is within walking distance down the beach to Phillipsburg, the capital of the Dutch side of the island. There are plenty of shops of all kinds, whether you are looking for t-shirts or beautiful jewelry. We always try to spend Saturdays at the airport where you can experience the planes coming in for a low landing over the Maho beach, or feeling the jet blast as you hang on the fence by the runway. In our stays here, we have taken the catamaran day cruise around the island, a sunset cruise on a 100' sailing ship and different land tours of the island. Our best tour was with a bartender at the resort seeing many of the local interest spots. We are all ready planning our trip there for next year.

Nice hotel. Beautiful view

Posted Jan 18, 2015
Pros: Quiet, adults only, staff friendly.
Cons: Update rooms. Evening activities could start earlier.
Location: Shopping in Phillipsburg. Taxis can take you anywhere on the island for around $20 one way.
We had a great time at the Sonesta Great Bay. The location was nice for shopping in Phillipsburg. We enjoyed watching thr cruise ships come and go. Down side was the afternoon traffic to get back to the resort was horrible. All the cruise ship guests were trying to get back to there ships. The hotel could use some updating, but it was clean. I suggest staying above the third floor on the ocean side. The food was always good. Sometimes a little cold due to the open air dining, but you always had the other restaurant choices if you didn't want buffet. No reservations required. My husband liked the casual atmosphere. He never felt under dressed in khaki shorts and sandals. Overall I would go back.

Had a wonderful vacation at this resort!

Posted Jan 18, 2015
Pros: location was awesome!! Food was very good.
Cons: Better quality cocktails at the bar.
Location: It is a short walk to the Front street and amazing shopping and restaurants. Great Bay beach is very pretty and nice although the sand is a bit rough.
We paid for the butler service and were happy to find that it was absolutely worth the money. We will now always choose and pay for butler service wherever we go if it is offered. It made all the difference in the world. I would not stay in the regular part of this hotel but enjoyed the one bedroom butler suite. It was a little small but very clean and comfortable. Our view was fantastic in room number 352. Food was very good but the quality of the drinks could improve. The drinks always seemed weak in flavor. The staff at this hotel is fantastic!

Great Hotel

Posted Jan 15, 2015
Great location, great employees, good food and booze. Best place to stay on Great Bay. You can walk into town and shop, beer in town is .99cents to $2. Great place for couples. Needed better beds though. We will return to the hotel.

decent hotel a bit run down, nice quiet location

Posted Dec 28, 2014
Pros: Most of the help, and the location and view
Cons: no overbooking, there were SO many dissatisfied guests! more sit down bars and entertainment, and fixing up worn and broken areas
Location: traffic around the island was horrible, but it was Christmas time, so we didn't go far. Maho is a huge resort. easy walk by beach to Phillipsburg
All inclusive is nice, but food choices are limited, but ok. The ala carte upscale restaurant is nice, but same menu almost all of the time. Buffets are just ok. Waterside restaurant is the same every day, and only italian for dinner. We paid for an upgrade to grand ocean view 8 months before arriving, but didn't recieve it because of over booking, and the front desk (Vicki) was not helpful and was short with us. No refund offered. Put us in residence area away from main hotel and ammenities, told us it was a 1 bedroom, but was plain room. Also alot of kids in that area, even though resort is adult only, which is the reason we chose this place. The a/c didn't work and it took alot of complaining and a whole day lost fighting w managment trying to get it fixed, and would not move us to another room, even though there were alot vacant that were held for people arriving at later times, dates. There are no sit down bars, except for a lobby bar with 6 stools, and no places to sit with entertainment, other than near the pool evenings. No real entertainment, a piano bar maybe? The beach is very small, and beach chairs with umbrellas, and chairs around the pools are held with people putting towels on early in the am. BUT the help, for the most part are very helpful, accomodating and friendly. Specifically Patrizia, dining room, Maritza and Owen, lobby bar, a pool bar tender, Nigel (?), Marcia, and especially Innocent who was helping everywhere and always so nice to everyone.
