Total DisappointmentPosted Jul 5, 2013
Pros: The snorkel equipment was free to use, and there were ice chests and beach towels.
Cons: Just some TLC and some elbow grease would do wonders. Too many defects even to list.
Location: It was close to downtown Cruz Bay, which allowed for walking to town down a very steep hill, but required a taxi back because of the steepness.
The "Guesthouse" was a run down, filthy old building that barely passed for hospitable. While the owner was a nice lady, the "Suite" was absolutely terrible. The sad part was, with minimal money and effort, it could be an awesome facility. As it is now, old, filthy, rundown, and not taken care of.

More like a mini-apartmentPosted Apr 4, 2013
Pros: The view overlooking Cruz Bay is amazing.
Location: Excellent location, only a 5 minute walk to all the action. Be prepared for a quick workout due to the steep hill to get back to the guest house.
The Hillcrest met and exceeded all of our expectations. We intentionally do not go for the canned and expensive resort experience. Our room was clean and comfortable. We stayed in the "Front Room" which is perfect for a couple, has a queen bed and a nice kitchette area. We found the kitchen stocked with eggs and bacon (to be prepared by us), a couple of pieces of fruit, muffins, mixers and four full bottles of liquor (vodka, rum, tequilla). This is not a b & b, but we didn't mind preparing our own coffee and simple breakfasts in the morning (there are grocery stores and markets near by). There was plenty of beach stuff to borrow. We used the beach chairs, beach umbrella, snorkeling gear and cooler. We packed up the cooler in the a.m. with water, sandwiches and beer and headed out for the day. Having a four wheel drive vehicle was a must to see the island beyond Cruz Bay. The price we paid for the accomodations, combined with the not having to rent beach gear and not eating every meal out, made our trip very ecomomical. The owner, Phylis, is kind, gracious and responsive. Although the room isn't attended to like a hotel, it was easy to keep everything in order and ask for changes in linens and towels when needed. We would highly recommend HIllecrest if you are looking for a low key, safe, clean and geographically desireable place.

Great spot for shopping/dining but not sleepingPosted Jan 8, 2013
Let me begin by saying that our trip to St. John was less about the lodgings than about getting out and exploring the beautiful island, so we did not want to pay out the nose for a fancy villa. Phyllis is a gracious and friendly hostess and it is nice to have towels, beach gear and food/beverages stocked and ready to use/consume. FYI - She no longer does ferry pick-ups though. We liked the proximity to shopping and restaurants. We rented a Jeep and getting to the gorgeous beaches was easy. With that said, we had some issues at Hillcrest that I didn't read in other review. Our family of five stayed in the Orchid Suite. This is a street level space without a view. We wanted to stay in town to get a better sense of the local vibe, but Cruz Bay during the night is LOUD. It is very hilly and at times we wondered if we were in the middle of a Nascar race. We slept with the windows open to enjoy the breeze (which I'm sure didn't help) but between the "race" cars, loud music, foot traffic, roosters, dogs, etc. we found ourselves frequently awake at night. For sleeping, there is a nice size bedroom w/ a queen bed and the living room has a full futon and single cot style bed. Our daughters were afraid to sleep in the front room next to the door to the driveway, so we squeezed all the beds into the bedroom. This made for a very tight bedroom and unusable living room, since all the furniture was in the bedroom. If I were to book again, I'd book a suite on the upper level.

window air conditioner never got the room cool. Saw a roach on the bed. Breakfast was supplied only the first morning and not replenished.

Cons: owners quarters are behind a locked gate - must have a cell phone to get her attention
Location: the walk up the hill is a challange
lumpy bed - new tv but only 2 channels - owner is hard to contact during stay - kitchen equipment is very old and sad

Great for the price.Posted Nov 18, 2012
Pros: has dvd, beach chair and umbrellas to share.
Cons: Wireless was weak and spotty.
Location: On very steep hill. Limited view for 3 of the 4 rooms.
Hillcrest Houseis a solid little set of 4 apartments above the floor owned and lived in by Phylis. Price varies by your view. Only the priciest room has the view shown in photo. Accommodations are great for the savings you get. Phyllis welcomes you with bacon, eggs, rum, and a few snacks and sodas already in your room. Room has hotplates, microwave, refrig. and assorted cooking/eating utensils. Main grocery is down (and more down) the street. House is up an extremely steep hill inside of the main town, Cruz Bay. Go ahead and get the a weekly jeep rental to get up and down that hill, particularly if you are planning on visiting the numerous beaches around the island. Taxi drivers really just want to go to the 3 main beaches and town.

Needs rerated at 1.5 starsPosted Jul 28, 2012 on Hotels.com
Place needs a makeover and a good cleaning. We had to have the owner remove the white down comforter with large yellow stains and small blood stains from our bed when we arrived and requested new sheets. I cleaned the bathroom sink and counter before we could use it and really, how much does a new toilet seat cost??? We kept flip flops on in the room and shower at all times. The window a/c unit was turned off while we were out, (not by us) and took a long time to cool the room down after a hot day out. The only good part was that it was within walking distance of cruz bay and had a great view which was clouded through the dirty windows. The owner kept the place well stocked with liquior and breakfast items, but I would have rather had some good maid service. We paid way too much and will not be coming back.

Overall, great for the pricePosted Jun 5, 2012
Pros: DIY breakfast that we ate on the patio every morning. Also snorkeling and beach gear to borrow.
Cons: Unsettling to not be able to find the hotel, and then to not be able to make contact. Exacerbated when we couldn't find check-in sign on site.
Location: Our room had a great water view, but Hillcrest earns that view with a long uphill walk.
The Good: Phyllis provides you with a fairly clean little room with a great working a/c, fan, tv, fridge & a half kitchen. The fridge is stocked with bacon and eggs for d-i-y breakfast, snacks and soda for the beach, & a bottle of rum. There are beach towels, plus the common area has snorkel equipment and lawn chairs. There's a rocky little beach about a 5-minute walk away, not good for swimming but great for a little sun or shell collecting. It's close to town where you can shop, eat, or grab a taxi for a nicer beach. The Bad: It's called the Hillcrest. This is a serious hill. Also, if you're planning on walking to it from the ferry, be sure you know where it is. Our iPhone map said it was up one hill; it was up a completely different hill. Catch a taxi if you have a lot of bags until you know the way. The Ugly: When we arrived and couldn't find it, we called the phone number and no one answered. When we finally got to the Hillcrest itself, we couldn't find the front desk. Called again, no answer. Called Expedia, they called, finally got through, and Phyllis came out. It's just her that works there, so if she doesn't hear the phone you get no one. I guess if you don't get an answer you should just stand at the gate and yell till she comes out. Also, the towels seemed clean but I dried off and had hair on me. I have cats, it looked like cat hair. I'm used to it so it didn't really bother me but be warned if you're allergic.

I would not recommend this place, nor would I ever go back to this hotel.
