Summer camp for adults
Posted Jan 18, 2013
Pros: Being outside in the fresh air for 10 days!
Cons: Cold showers
Location: A unique island, hikers paradise!
This is like summer camp for adults, I loved it! I got to be outdoors for 10 days straight, what a treat. This is not for everyone but for those who love the outdoors and love life without modern conveniences. The atmosphere is campy, happy and communal. I felt like a hippie and loved every minute sometimes questioning how I live my own life. This is a rare place and such a treat. So sad it's closing in a few weeks. I loved my stay in D3. Gorgeous view, bird watching from my deck at each meal.

Wonderful Experince at Maho Bay
Posted Jan 12, 2013
Maho Bay was a wonderful experience. The camp is for the eco minded. The tent cottage had comfortable beds. The food is the restaurant was very good and the portions were very large. We had cereal in our tent cottage for breakfast and snacks for lunch as we were hiking, or a hot dog at the beach cafe. The smoothies were good there, too. There is much to do for those who love the outdoors. Hiking and snorkeling are the primary activities. One thing - be prepared to do a lot of walking up and down steps. The beach is at the bottom of the steps. The activities directors were very helpful in planning hikes and things to do. Don't hesitate to ask them questions.

Relaxing stay at Maho Bay
Posted Jan 9, 2013
Cons: It's closing.
Maho Bay Camp is not a hotel; you will be disappointed if that's your expectations. It's an eco-camp, primitive but way more interesting than any 5 star hotel in my opinion. Breathtaking views, beautiful, sandy beach and coral reef right there, good food, friendly staff, activities for adults and children, relaxing atmosphere, and it's even inexpensive.

Great place to connect with nature
Posted Jan 7, 2013
Pros: Access to beaches, hiking trails and luxury camping feel
Cons: Be ready for lots of stairs, although I am not complaining
Location: Beautifully remote
If you are looking for a luxury hotel feel and a high maintenance and pampered experience, Maho Bay Camps is not for you. If you love camping and the outdoors, Maho Bay Camps is the place you are looking for. Surrounded by pristine beaches, fabulous snorkeling, great hiking and tropical vegetation, it is really an amazing place. The staff were pleasant and really helpful. Food on site was good and we really enjoyed the glass blowing. It is far away from town, so either rent a car or be prepared to take the taxis/shuttles to town. It is is truly sad that they willl be closing on May 15th and that my first time will be the last time I visit. If you have an opportunity to stay here, do not miss it.

For those used to camping outdoors, this is a relatively inexpensive way to see St. John. For the most part I enjoyed my stay and thought that room accomodations were good for what they were, but the overall complex is looking a bit run down. While the food was very good, and the snorkeling was excellent, the showers (with cold water only, little to no water pressure, and rotten enclosures, and nasty pull-strings for the valves) could be improved upon. Still, it's in a beautiful location, with lots of beaches and hiking nearby. The value for the dollar is good if "roughing it" is your thing.

Maho Bay Camps is a well staffed campground in a very beautiful, natural location with easy access to several nice beaches for swimming and snorkeling. To get around the camp there are long wooden boardwalks with lots of stairs. They refer to the rooms as tents but they are basic 2" x4" and plywood structures with screens. We found the staff very friendly and they had some nice activities. Their prepared meals are good but not cheap - but then again most food on the island is expensive.Their shuttle service to Cruz Bay ferry and neighboring beaches was good.
