“Good place for short stay”

Great place for one or two nights. Beds are convenient but not very wide. Doors are really thin. Everything else is great.

“I'll always stay here!”

The Columbus Hotel was wonderful! It was cozy and comfortable, the breakfast in the morning was very good, it was very convenient to public transportation, shopping,and restaurants, and the staff were very friendly and helpful. I will always stay there when traveling to Stockholm! Good things to know, however, are that there is no elevator and some rooms are on the 3rd floor, and some rooms do not have a bathroom within them - there is a shared bath in the hallway. I had a single room with bathroom, overlooking the park in the back, and could not have been happier!

Area recommendations

I've been to Stockholm twice in the past year, and have stayed in Sodermalm both times. I recommend that area because it has a nice mix of the "old" and the "new," has good restaurants, some decent shopping, and is within walking distance of Gamla Stan (Old Town) which has more good restaurants, beautiful buildings, and very good shopping! The is also easy access to central Stockholm and smaller towns nearby via commuter trains, the metro and bus. It's hard to find good hotels in Stockholm at reasonable cost, but I've gotten decent deals at both the Columbus Hotel and at Rival through Expedia - neither are inexpensive, but both are excellent and both in Sodermalm.

Getting around

There are several options for getting into Stockholm from Arlanda airport, and the people at the Visitor Center (after you go through customs) can give you a map and help you figure out best way to go. Taxi is the most direct, but also the most expensive, If you take a taxi, make sure you get one with a "fixed rate" from the airport to your destination, so that there are no surprises when you get wherever you're going. The other options are the Arlanda Express, which is a train from the airport direct to Stockholm's Central Station. It takes about 20 minutes. You can also take a bus to the Central Station - it takes about 45 minutes, but the cost is about half that of the Arlanda Express. If you aren't in a hurry, take the bus - it's a nice ride. Once you are at Stockholm Central Station, you can connect to commuter train or metro to get the rest of the way to your destination, if you aren't staying near central Stockholm. The Central Station is confusing at first, but like most "central stations" there is signage in both English and Swedish, and people are generally helpful. If you're going to be there for several days using public transportation, I recommend getting an "Access" card, which allows you to ride any public transport - you can buy a 3-day or 7-day pass, and those can be purchased near commuter train and metro gates.

What to pack

My strongest advice about what to pack includes two things: if you will be handling your own luggage, pack light - although many people take roller bags and back packs on public transportation, large bags would be very hard to manage. The other piece of advice is to pack shoes you will be comfortable walking in, and maybe even pack two pair of those! Stockholm is very pedestrian, and even when taking public transportation for longer distances, you will have to walk to the station, and much of the pavement in Stockholm is stone or stone tile - it's very pretty, but not so comfortable on the feet if you are wearing the wrong shoes for the distance and terrain!

Must see

Go to Gamla Stan and walk around - it's the "Old Town" and is worth just looking and taking photos, although the shopping is excellent as well. The architecture is wonderful, and the streets are narrow, paved with stone. There are also nice places to get a coffee or glass of beer and sit outside and people-watch!
