“Terric experience, wonderful staff”

we arrived after flying for almost 20 hours and the Rival staff made our room available at 9:00 am. They also upgraded us to a delux room with a terrace overlooking the park. By extending these courtesies, they made our first day in Stockholm much more enjoyable. The location is very convenient to the Gamla Stan, which is the old town area. From the rooms, to entire staff, it could not have been a better experience

Area recommendations
Gamla Stan for the shopping, Restaurants and old world atmosphere
Getting around
Definitely take a local cruise around the closest islands that make up Stockholm

“Quiet Hotel near Stockholm's Old Town”

Great hotel located just south of Gamla Stan - Stockholm's old town. Metro stop ust a 5 minute wlak from the hotel takes you to Gamla Stan in 3 minutes and central Stockholm in 5 minutes. Adjacent to a nice quiet square with grass, trees and a large fountain.

“Cool hotel near hip Stockholm”

This was the last hotel we stayed in during a recent trip to Sweden, and it was the best. It's cool and trendy, but very accessible and the staff is really nice - I mean, genuinely nice and helpful and fun. The rooms are super comfortable, and the bathrooms (while small) are efficient and well thought out. The added services (including breakfast) are not cheap, but there are lots of inexpensive cafes, restaurants, laundries, and bars nearby. The hotel is within walking distance to the trendy SoFo neighborhood of Stockholm, so it was a great choice for us, since we were looking for nightlife, shopping, and cool stuff to do. It's also a block from the Mariatorget subway station, so you can get to Central Station in 10 minutes.

“Great location!”

Hotel Rival was well located in Sodermalm, the "Brooklyn" of Stockholm. Quieter than the bustling business district and the charming and crowded old town, but an easy walk to both. Room was small but clean and the staff was very pleasant and helpful. Restaurant is very good. Only small complaint is that the carpet in our room needed replacing.

Area recommendations
The old town is a great place to wander. It's known as Gamla Stan and is quaint and charming. There are lots of nice little resturants, shops, and bars. I would also highly recommend the Vasa Museum on the island of Djurgården, which contains a warship that sank on its maiden voyage in 1628 and was salvaged in 1961.
Getting there
Take the Arlanda Express to the central train station and then walk, take the Metro, or take a cab to your hotel. You'll save about half the price of a cab from the airport, which costs about $80.

“Good choice for Stockholm”

Spent 5 nights here. Comfortable room, nice restaurant--ate at hotel twice. Convenient to subway stop, but also an easy walk to old town/Gamla Stan, or other restaurants in Gamla Stan and Sodermalm. Very quiet room, facing courtyard. Air conditioned (found that even though temperatures were low, rooms in Stockholm get stuffy fast due to high humidity). Windows of course work most of time for temp control, but good to have AC as an alternative. Breakfast not included in rate. Buffet available, but also a number of bakeries, 7-11, etc within a block of hotel. Hotel has its own bakery as well. Free espresso maker available to guests and free WIFI; free DVD player and movies. Only complaint would be late room cleaning. Twice we got back in late afternoon (say, 3:30) and room hadn't been cleaned. We just put out the Do Not Disturb sign and let it pass.

Area recommendations
We liked Sodermalm (the part where Rival is in, at least). To us, Gamla Stan is too "touristy."
Getting around
For all the chatter about transportation being included in the Stockholm Pass, and T-Bann passes, we found that nearly every place was easily walkable from the Rival Hotel, once you check in and don't have your bags to deal with. And we aren't all that fit. Price it out, you may find you don't need the passes, we just bought one coupon strip, which gives 8 subway trips. That lasted us for 5 nights/4 days.
Must see
Vasa Ship Museum is the high point of Stockholm. Line is long but moves fast; lots of space inside, but the hold up is at the ticket booths.

“Very Impressed”

Having visited Stockholm previously, I was relatively familiar with Old Town and Slussen. I decided to stay in Sodermalm. The area was great. Cafes and plenty of interesting and quaint shops. I would definitely stay there again. Each evening there seemed to be a different event in the bar. This added to the atmostphere and eclectic look and feel of the hotel. It didn't hurt to see a pop star checking in either! I hope your stay is as enjoyable.

Area recommendations
Slussen or Sodermalm
What to pack
Be sure to check the weather before you go. If you don't want to pack or wear a heavy coat, I'd recommend several lightweight layers and a good scarf.

“A great place to stay”

The Hotel Rival is in a great location -- lots of small shops and boutiques to browse, a 10-15 minute walk to downtown Stockholm -- I'd definitely stay there again. The room was on the small side, but we were only there for one night, so it wasn't a big deal. I was especially impressed with the staff -- they were great when we had to leave a suitcase for a couple of days while we were in the north of Sweden, even though we weren't staying there when we came back to Stockholm. I'd definitely stay there again.

“Can't fault it. Very good.”

We had a deluxe room overlooking the the pleasant square. Didn't have a balcony, but that didn't matter as the massive window opened up for a great view (Room 606). If you are in the lower levels, all you'll have is tree view. Anywhere else is yard view. I would come back here automatically. Restaurant is good, the cafe associated with the hotel is just as good for breakfast/croissants etc. Cafe Rival fully packed most of the time so they're doing something right. If you're up for it, do the cycle hire scheme. there is a cycle bank 20 metres from the front of the hotel. You will see much more of Stockholm on a bike. Lovely city, great hotel, great time. Room spotless every day, great bathroom, bed. First class, and thanks.

Area recommendations
Not Gamla Stan as that is the medieval/ancient part. Worth a walk around though.
When to go
Summer, definitely.
Getting around
Do the Stockholm bike hire thing. Top tip: take a small chain and lock. You can hire the bikes for up to 3 hours before you have to return them to a bike station. If you have just taken bikes from a station and see a museum/restaurant you want to go to, you can lock the bikes and enjoy the attraction. Or leave somebody outside guarding the bikes. 25 euros(?) for 3 days I think. Great value and Stockholm is a fantastic to cycle around. They are much more respectful to cyclists because everybody's Mum rides a bike! A lovely city. Wine's expensive though.
