Property Amenities
Relax in grandeur, right in the heart of the Old Town’s narrow alleyways, shops, hundreds of restaurants and bustling public outside. This 51-room hotel is in a charming 17th-century building in the oldest, most enchanting part of Stockholm, on a corner facing the city’s trendy Södermalm district and Slussen interchange.
Take time out to enjoy an afternoon coffee in the lobby, or during the summer months, on the cozy, roof terrace resplendent with flowers, with a view over the Old Town’s rooftops and spires.
The Hotel is on Lilla Nygatan (two streets across from Västerlånggatan) in the Old Town, some 50 m from Kornhamns Torg and 200 m from Slussplan/Skeppsbron. The Royal Palace, Cathedral, House of Nobility and Riddarholmen with its historical church are less than 500 m away.
If you’re arriving by air we recommend the Arlanda Express rail-link to Stockholm Central Station.
If you’re travelling by coach or train to Stockholm Central/Cityterminal, there’s an enjoyable walk (of just over 1 km, taking Vasagatan – Tegelbacken – Vasabron – Stora Nygatan – right down Tyska Brinken – left on Lilla Nygatan, were the hotel is just 20 m away), or take the subway to T Gamla Stan (exit Gamla Stan, follow Schönfeldts Gränd alleyway up to Lilla Nygatan, then right).
If you’re driving, head for Slussen/Södermalmstorg, and then take Katarinavägen – Munkbroleden – Munkbrogatan – Lilla Nygatan. Remember that you can leave your car outside the Hotel for a maximum of five minutes. On most days, there’s an external car pick-up service available for a fee, or you can park in the OK/Q8 car park at Slussen (some 500 m away) or along Skeppsbron (also some 500 m away).
The entrance to Gamla Stan subway station is just some 100 m from the Hotel, at Mälartorget. Buses depart from Kornhamns Torg or Skeppsbron/Slussplan, where you could also take the Djurgården ferry. We recommend environmental taxis (Taxi Stockholm), which you can book from reception.
Rooms
Hotel room sizes vary from slightly more compact standard offerings, to more spacious deluxe accommodation. All rooms have wooden floors, are bright and individually furnished in the Gustavian style with recently renovated bathrooms, and cozy beds that help enhance an unusually charming hotel experience in the picturesque Old Town. This Hotel has a three-star rating, Svanen environmental certification, and is fully non-smoking.
Room Amenities
Dining
Although the hotel doesn’t have its own restaurant/bar, there are hundreds of great restaurants, bars and cafes right on your doorstep in the Old Town. There’s everything from Michelin-starred restaurants offering unique culinary experiences, to classics and local taverns with great food for just over SEK 100, all just a short walk away.
Breakfast is served in the Hotel, while we provide free coffee or tea in the lobby in the afternoon. Please contact Hotel reception during your stay—they’ll be happy to recommend the best restaurants and help you book a table.
Entertainment
Staying in this Hotel is a real experience in itself. But if you’re looking for more, there’s some great entertainment close by. Just step out onto the street and take a stroll along some of the Old Town’s narrow alleyways, where you’ll find a huge variety of shopping and culinary experiences. The Old Town, with its origins from the mid-13th century, is one big living museum. Sweden’s National Cathedral, Nobel Museum and Royal Palace with its over 600 rooms, and an array of museums/exhibitions including the Royal Armory, are less than 500 meters away. Don’t miss the guard-mounting parade and daily changing of the guard at the Royal Palace. If you’re heading for the Palace, you could head past Järntorget, where you’ll find Mårten Trotzigs Gränd, Stockholm’s oldest and narrowest alleyway, just 90 cm wide at one point. Don’t forget to visit Riddarholmen with its amazing 13th century church.
In the evenings, there are plenty of bars and pubs all around, including the legendary Engelen/Kolingen and Stampen jazz club. If you’re trendier, Slussen/Södermalmstorg, is just 300 m away, which opens onto Götgatan with its exciting strip of restaurants and bars right the way to Medborgarplatsen, with Söderhallarna (including its indoor market) and plenty of outdoor cafes during the summer months.
A wide range of sightseeing trips are available from reception. If you’re looking for something different, why not try a ghost tour?

“Like at home or at good friends'”
Service was at the best level - restaurants booking, tea and coffee free of charge, providing with extra sheet. Breakfast was a good choice. Decoration of the room contained elements of luxury. Room was spacy enough. General impression was such that we felt like at home or at least at good friends'.
“Loved it”
We were very pleased with our stay here. I am always amazed when reviewers complain about European rooms being too small. We spend very little time in our rooms, because we are out enjoying the sights. Why is room size so important? We found the hotel, and the rooms, pleasant and comfortable. The breakfasts are more than we expected, in terms of quality and variety.
“great hotel in the best stockholm neighborhood”
When my boyfriend and I decided to travel to Stockholm for a week, we read mostly about hotels located in "the city" or in Sodermalm, the gentrifying and youthful part of Stockholm. However, when we spoke with a number of our Swedish friends and told them we'd chosen a hotel in the Gamla Stan, they said it was obvious we had done our research. The Gamla Stan is one of the most beautiful and quiet areas of the city, and in the perfect location to access all of the city's treasures. Walking through the Gamla Stan at night was one of our favorite activities. That said, the Hotel Rica Gamla Stan is a great place to stay in that neighborhood. It's relatively small and unimposing, but our room was pretty and clean, the service was efficient, and the hotel breakfast was delicious. It had the feel of a bed and breakfast, which ended up being just right.
“a very good choice”
Hotel is very conveniently located in Old City. Rooms are small but so is the old city itself. Excellent service. Worth its price!
“Very happy with this hotel.”
Lovely quiet room (room 431), with pretty rooftop garden deck just outside our door, comfy king bed, delicious breakfast (go early to avoid the crowd), friendly helpful front desk staff, perfect location for walking, couldn't ask for more. Met some guests, however, who complained that their room was noisy. Oh, and try the mints at the front desk, they're great!
“Historic Hotel in Old Town”
Gamla Stan is Stockholm's picturesque Old Town and the Rica Gamla Stan is perfectly situated for anyone who wants to walk the charming streets of the area. The hotel is as old as its surroundings which means that while it is clean, it is cramped. Rooms are very small. Bathrooms have modern fixtures and amenities. It is fairly standard in Stockholm that A/C is not in the rooms, so in summer you need to open windows. If you have a room at the front of the hotel, expect some street noise as well as considerable daylight well into the night from May through August. The staff at the hotel is small and helpful though has a sometimes vexing Nordic aloofness. Breakfast is very good but not the reason to stay here - choose the Rica for its location for walking in town. If you are just staying one night, there are other hotels more convenient to train and airport.
“Good Place to Stay in Stockholm”
The hotel is well located, has old world charm, and provides a very lovely breakfast. The staff was consistently nice and helpful.
“Very pleasant hotel in a great location”
The Rica Gamla Stan is a very comfortable, small hotel in a great location in the old city of Stockholm. Fourth floor rooms were very comfortable, great beds and quaint furnishing . Great for a short stay and for visitors looking for a more local and intimate stay. A great breakfast was included. The staff were very helpful. Could not ask for more, good value for Sweden and the expedia deal, including the flight was he best to be found.
