“Over-rated”

Stayed for one night on 21 August 2010. Hotel staff were very helpful and polite, didnt eat there other than for breakfast which had a wide variety to suit all tastes and was very nice. However, my husband has stayed before and said the food in the restaurants are magnificent. Rooms and corridors could do with a lick of paint. Room was basic, similar to a Travelodge. Nothing wrong with travelodge, I have stayed in plenty and are worth the money. Through Expedia we had a discount on our room but would not have have been happy if I had to pay the full price if you book through the hotel direct. Rooms are not very soundproof, as we discovered when we had a hen party staying in opposite rooms. Overall, i would stay at this hotel again as you dont spend much time in your room, so not an issue. Drinks are expensive, but thats what you expect for this type of hotel. Grounds are beautiful and bars are spacious.

“Parts of hotel looking very tired, trading on reputation”

As a 4* hotel, the Belfrey is looking a bit tired in places. Our bedroom was comfortable enough, but the window was filthy and did not look as if it had been cleaned for years. However, the real problem was in the bathroom where the extractor fan is clearly not powerful enough. Consequently the ceiling over the bath was black with mildew and flaking paintwork which gave an overall impression of not caring as this should be an easy problem to resolve. When we went down for breakfast the following morning it was very busy so we were shown to an overflow breakfast room which was very quiet. Unfortunately, as a result most of the hot food was cold as it was not turned over quickly enough and the service was a bit slow. Overall the hotel appears to cater for golfers and functions which in fairness it does very well but it seems to have forgotten some of the basics that go with a 4* hotel. We attended a 40th birthday celebration and the service and the quality of the catering was excellent. The Brabazon Course looked in great condition and is obviously still the main attraction for the Belfrey.

“fire and ice”

fire and ice pampering experience was fantastic and would recommend to anyone. our room was dusty my husband was able to write "clean me" on the bedside table. room was tropically hot and the radiator screamed every time the heating came on. we ended up switching the radiator off and having the window open all night even though it was snowing. we left a comment card at reception the following morning but have received no reply. for the price you pay and the reputation of the hotel i was extremely disappointed. don,t be put off the fire and ice experience though.
