Clean hotel, convenient location

Posted Jan 4, 2014
Pros: Great location, friendly staff, very inexpensive
Cons: hard beds, squeaky bathroom door, heat turned off during the day
Location: The gardens of Suzhou are incredible. Great restaurants, shopping on Shiquan JIe. Bank of China nearby. Auchan supermarket/mall about 10 min. taxiride
My wife, daughter, and I stayed at the Gusu hotel while visiting our son, who is studying at Suzhou University. This hotel is very convenient to the university. The main street, Shiquan Jie, is a hopping area with great restaurants, shops, conveniences stores, etc. The hotel and rooms are clean, and the staff is friendly, although not very proficient in English. (This is not unusual or surprising in a Chinese hotel, but other hotels I booked in China and Russia through Expedia had proficient English speakers on staff.) We went to Beijing for a weekend and the Gusu let us store our suitcases at the hotel at no charge. Taxis were easy to flag down on Shiquan Jie, or the receptionists would call taxis for us. Suzhou is an amazing city, with great gardens, restaurants, shops, and other sites. The rooms themselves were not particularly comfortable: beds were hard, bathroom door was a sliding door that squeaked, and probably the biggest drawback was that the heat was turned off in the hotel from mid-morning to late afternoon in late December.
