“Westend backpacker in Sydney”

I was very pleased with the Westend Backpacker. It is geared more toward the younger 20ish crowd but, if what you are looking for is a simple, comfortable place with friendly and knowledgeable staff, then you will be happy with this hotel. It was easy to find and it was in the heart of the city so, there was lots of things to do near within walking distance.

As youth hostel goes, they are just what you would expect, you get charged for everything and they give you the minimal that you need in a room, just a bunk bed and a hanger closet without any hangers = useless. Bring your own towel and hair dryer because of course they don't provide anything. The location is superb and they do offer some free drinks and a couple of tours. (Definitely go on the Bondi beach to Conggee Beach hike). Cleaning staff for the hotel is great, does a wonderful job. Reception staff is polite but not does not go out of their way to make you happy (again, hostel environment). Hope this helps.

“The worst place we've stayed at.”

We had a family room, was musty. The sheets were torn and faded and had ugly stains on them. The receptionist was sick with a cold during the H1N1 outbreak and handled our passports while blowing her nose. Could not help us with simple bus information. There were huge cockroaches in the kitchen.

backpackers' place to stay. can't be called as a HOTEL. Too expensive for the quality of room and service

“Not worth the money!”

Although the staff AT THE RECEPTION was very nice and helpful, my overall experience was not good. I got a private room ensuite. Instead, when I got to the hotel they told me that it was actually extended ensuite which means that the toilets were outside the room but I have a key so they are only mine. The room was as simple as they come, the shower and the toilets were even simpler. On the second day I saw a cockroach on the bed I understood how clean the room was. The Bed was a "bunk bed" the lower bed had a spring mattress in which the springs were completely broken. The upper bed a bit better, but not good. As I got a PRIVATE room, I expected to have a "do not disturb" sign to hang on the door. That does not exist in this hotel. The first morning I woke up at about 10am by the cleaning guy knocking on my door and bursting into my room without me even having the chance to answer the knock, this was followed 10 minutes later buy another cleaning guy doing the exact same thing. Even though I complained to the reception and was promised that it would not happen again - it DID happen again. The room also had a speaker in it so the reception could shout out to all the hotel guests when ever they wanted about their parties and events, might be good for the dorms and backpackers, but not right for everyone. Even if I wouldn't have had all those problems, just the room itself was so overpriced. It was just to simple and uncomfortable to cost that much.
