Great views in Syhdney

Pros: The view from the bedroom.
Cons: Staff attitudes and number of staff on duty at check-in and check-out.
Location: At the top of a steep hill but close to all attractions.
Our room had magnificent views over Sydney Harbour B ridge and the Opera House. The carpeting in the hotel needs updating. The lifts are swift and efficient - the staff at check-in and check-out could usefully take lessons from them.

Location: Near all tourist attractions
This was the last hotel we stayed in at the end of our 5week honeymoon touring the East Coast of Australia and what a way to end it. Amazing view over looking Sydney Opera House, a gorgeous room, very comfy bed, this hotel had it all!

Excellent restaurants and location. Terrible staff

Pros: Restaurants were excellent. Buffet breakfast is the best in Sydney.
Cons: Staff are a bit like robots, need a bit more personality.
Location: Location is the best. The rocks are historic and beautiful. Restaurants, shops and cafes are niche, with short walk into CBD.
Stayed for birthdays celebrations. Always loved the Shangri-la, but first time to go there with babies in-tow. Food is always amazing. Staff however, are not so welcoming. Professional, yet dry and nonchalant - I guess simply doing their jobs, nothing more, nothing less. Had a terrible experience with bell desk manager giving bad directions and ended up walking for an hour in the cold and rain with my baby in the dark. Not impressed. Came back disgruntled and his response "catch a cab because I have a pram" and gave me a map. We can never fault the food and restaurants, their chef is magnificent and probably the only thing that keeps us coming back. New spa CHI, is beautiful, however staff are a little clueless. Recommend for business but not family.

Fantastic hotel experience

The occasion was an anniversary. From the moment we arrived we were made to feel special. The staff were excellent at doing their job. The views of the harbour were spectacular. The service at the Altitude restaurant and Cafe for our breakfast was first class. We thoroughly enjoyed our experience.

Excellent location, walking distance to Circular Quay & all forms of transportation. Slightly disappointed that only sachets of instant coffee available in room. I expected a plunger and decent coffee in a hotel of this quality.

Stunning views of Sydney Harbour

Staying at the Shangri La was very luxurious. As we entered the executive King Suite on the 28th floor, a personalised welcome message popped up on the tv and the room was big and tastefully decorated. There was a massive window stretching across the entire room with a window seat running underneath. The views were stunning as the sun was going down. The marble bathroom was clean and had a lovely deep bath and massive shower. The only thing I would say is that we left the room for dinner and the maid let herself in and turned down our bed and moved our things around. Although this sounds lovely, I was not expecting the maid to enter the room after we left for dinner, as we were only staying one night. I made sure when we got back from dinner that I put the 'do not disturb' light on after that as I didn't know when they would let themselves in again. Aside from that I had an amazing stay at this hotel, the staff so friendly and helpful. Was close to pancakes on the rocks where we had breakfast and looked around the weekend markets. We also did some star gazing at the Sydney Observatory Museum Night Tour and had a lovely steak at Phillips Foote! All in all, loved staying at this hotel and would highly recommend the Shangri La for a relaxing stay with stunning views!

Great view but overcharged

Cons: I paid for an expensive room that was unavailable.
Location: Near the circular quay but a walk up a steep hill to get to the hotel.
I reserved an Executive King Grand Harbourview room. This room is listed as floors 29 and up. It was significantly more expensive to be on such a high floor but I splurged for the view. I was unable to check in early (as is common here) but was assured my room was worth waiting for as they were putting me in a corner room. When I was able to check in later that day (I had a business meeting) I was told my luggage was in my room. It was not. I went to my meeting very underdressed and did not have my printed itinerary. My room was a corner room - but only on the 15th floor. When I had my itinerary and went to the front desk they told me they did not have a high floor room available. When I checked out and again complained about paying for a high floor and not staying on a high floor I was told that the upper floors were being renovated so no rooms were available. When I voiced my displeasure on check out the very polite young lady kept saying "there's nothing I can do" since the floors were being renovated. I was not refunded the difference in price.

Hotel has a corporate / business feel a bit differ

Location: Good location near the Rocks.
We had several noteworthy experiences at this hotel. First the good, Vanessa the young lady who was in charge of the Horizon Club was very sharp, polite, engaging and clearly wanted to make our stay a special welcoming experience. Second, we found Colin at the concierge desk very helpful. On the negative side, we found the buffet breakfast to be chaotic at best. The female employee who greeted us seemed unable to speak or understand English, and she was flat out rude. Further the employees working the buffet breakfast including the man who appeared to be the manager were bordering on rude. Additionally, they incorrectly billed us two of the three mornings we utilized the buffet. This was a very different experience vs. the Horizon Club. The most disturbing aspect of our stay involved the engaging of a taxi to take us to dinner. The bellman from the hotel said something to the taxi driver that to us sounded like “Americans”. I asked the taxi driver what bellman said and why. The taxi driver refused to answer. At a cab fare of $A23, we got out of the taxi, paid the fare and walked around the block to our destination as the driver indicated that the entrance to the restaurant was on a one way street and that he need to circle the block to reach. The taxi ride from the restaurant back to the hotel was $A12. Clearly we had been taken for a ride and it certainly appears the bellman at the hotel tipped off the driver with his “American” announcement.
