"Conveniently located for 2 day tour of takayama"
My second stay at hotel. Convenient to JR and bus.stations and easy walk to town sights. Room is a little small but ok for a 1 or 2 night stay. Hotel resturant serves a Japanese breakfast.

"Great introduction to Ryokan experience"
Asunaro was an easy walk and easy to find from the station. It was lovely inside. We were treated with hot tea on arrival and a lovely young lady helped explain about wearing Yukata, slippers and how to take the onsen. Our futons were very comfortable, just a bit squishy in the room with our luggage and four of us but we managed...2 adults and 2 kids. Free Wifi worked great. The onsen was nice, my kids and I went 5 times in 3 days, a great introduction, with nice toiletries and facilities. Quite an easy walk to old town, and the staff also recommend good restaurants that have English speaking staff.

"Nice hotel with hot spring on the rooftop"
A modern Japanese hotel with hot spring bathroom (public and individual) on the rooftop. No additional charge for using the hot spring. Free washing machine available and the use of drying machine is very cheap. You cannot wear shoe in the hotel as you have to store the shoes in your designated locker. It is very good experience to walk inside the hotel by barefoot on Tatami. It is extremely convenient and comfortable. They have their own souvenir shop which sells good products. The breakfast is very good. And they also offer free noodle at night after 8:30pm (though i didn't try, they claim it delicious!) Wifi is only available on 1/F and 2/F.

"Authentic ryokan experience, great bath house"
For a more authentic ryokan experience, it is inevitable that you will be staying some distance from the centre of town. There are lots of older-style Japanese buildings in the immediate vicinity, complete with rice paddies, and nearby attractions such as the Hida folk village, which we never got to see as we couldn't drag ourselves away from the historic precinct of Takayama. The latter is about a 25min walk from Ryokan Murayama, and mostly we preferred walking to taking the bus ride to the station, which only gets you about half-way and doesn't run after hours. We used the ryokan's free shuttle service to the train station on the morning of our departure. Our room for two nights certainly was spacious, the futons very comfortable, and there was a mini-fridge in the ante-chamber. Murayama-san was a lively and genial host, and the staff friendly and helpful. This is the only place we stayed at in Japan that had mixed bathing, albeit in a separate bath house for couples or families. That was a great plus, though you do need to wait your turn and grab it as soon as it becomes available.

"Memorable"
This hotels most celebrated years are behind it (checkout some of the photos of guests from it's earlier grandeur# but it has all the facilities and good service. We stayed in a family room #Japanese futons# and ate breakfast and dinner at the hotel. High standard dinner and big buffet breakfast. We found the staff to be professional & enthusiastic however don't expect flawless service in english. The courtesy bus to/from the station and the old town is very useful however you may want to navigate their website #via the translator link# to identify the schedule before leaving. There is a timetable inside the lobby on the wall #once you've arrived). Takayama Green is not 5-star, nor a no-frills business hotel, or a folksy ryokan experience. A little quirky, and classy, if a little faded, we had a memorable stay and we would stay there again. Takayama itself and it's surrounds offers a lot especially for trekking/walkers. PS Checkout the top-floor bar and the Lovers Point at the entrance!

Room was nice, good facilities, free shuttle bus to take you to and from the hotel, and very helpful staff. WiFi was sketchy at best, and the buffet dinner was average.
