Around 11 miles (18 kilometers) to the northeast of Tanjung Pinang is Bintan, an important regional city and the home of Pasar Oleh Oleh Market, Bintan Island Elephant Park and Trikora Beach. Santa Maria Cave, Ria Bintan Golf Club and Banyan Tree Temple are other good spots to visit.
Sometimes, the best travel memories are to be found in local cafés and restaurants. Popular ingredients in this area are beef and yam. Two regional favorites worth tracking down are nasi goreng (fried rice) are gado-gado (salad made from par- boiled vegetables, eggs and peanut sauce). Klepon (green rice flour ball with palm sugar) is a commonly enjoyed last course. Jasmine tea is a popular drink in this region.
