Not recommended: The check in was fast, doormen were great & helpful. The lobby looks classic & has charm. My 1st room was nice & super comfortable. The bed was the most comfortable ever. The bathroom was spacious, bright & had a great shower with good pressure. Unfortunately we were woken up at 8 AM by construction noise. Front desk said it was not in the hotel (my boyfriend saw signs of construction on the floor we were) & didnt look very happy about getting us another room. The 2nd room had two mattresses instead of one as we had before. The cleanliness of both rooms was impeccable & the housekeeping kept everything organized. The in-room entertainment is limited to a couple of movies & even tough the guest directory says there is a list of DVDs at Concierge, there are none available. The restaurants were my biggest disappointment. The Deli had a really slow service but the sandwiches & pastries were great. The main breakfast room was well decorated & had a great buffet but one of my guests asked for a French Toast & the waiter didnt know what to serve. I think it was brave of him to say that he didnt know what the dish was & he, after being told what it was, went back to the kitchen to have the dish prepared. Obviously the chef didnt know it either & sent something that was not a French Toast & even decorated the dish with tomatoes & parsley. The hotel is THE location in the city & one of the best hotels but some departments are not being as attentive as others. See all reviews for this hotel

Recommended: I really enjoyed my stay at the Alster Hof (as a tourist, not business traveler). The staff was extremely professional and efficient. The rooms were not at all luxurious, but very clean and in good condition. Its location is magnificent (1 min away from the Binnenalster and a 5 min walk from Jungfernstieg). Recommended: A great experience. Stayed for two full days. My room overlooked the canal. It was peaceful and beautifully decorated. Very modern and tastefully designed and decorated. Great gym/pool. Top location(a few blocks from the Jungfernstieg S-Bahn stop using the Rathhaus exit). Breakfast was not included and the cost, for me--on a budget, was steep because the US $$ exchange rate is so low. But the choices were extensive and the service was excellent so I treated myself after a long flight. Close to all major shopping and the inner Alster Lake.I highly recommend this hotel. Recommended: This hotel is nicely situated in Hamburg, very near the Opera House and lots of restaurants and shopping. The walk to the Rathaus is a pleasant one and the subway is almost at the hotel doorstep. Definitely worth considering if the price is reasonable. See all reviews for this hotel

Recommended: I stayed in Hamburg several times over the last year, this hotel is a solid choice with nice rooms and nice windows that you can open (especially important for Hamburg if you like to sleep to sound of rain). The location is excellent, a short walk to almost any quarter, which makes for a nice selection of cafes to go for breakfast and a newspaper. Having said this, I don't find anything special about Steigenberg to mention -- it is a large hotel with a lot of rooms and a lot of people, and that's about it. Recommended: Had a lovely stay of 4 nights at this hotel. Staff were uniformly friendly, pleasant, helpful. Room was very clean and quiet, and of decent size. In the spa I only used the pool -- very nice. Dinner at the in-house Piazza Romana restaurant was lovely if a bit pricey, service and food were excellent. Overall pleasant atmosphere. The lack of a clothes iron or a coffee-pot in the room was a bit of an inconvenience, but coffee-shops at least abound within minutes' walking distance. See all reviews for this hotel
