Sheer elegance

Posted Jul 20, 2013
Pros: The ambiance, grounds, landscaping and authencitucity
Cons: Night assistance. (See previous answer)
Location: We were there for just one night, ate there and attended the very enjoyable Capital Steps so things nearby not relevant
It was terrific except for the female night desk clerk. We had been having trouble with room keys. We were unable to open our room door at 9:45pm after several attempts. Went to the front of the Founders Building where our room was located) to use the phone. That was also non working. So we walked about 500 yards to the Registration Desk only to be met by the desk clerk who appeared annoyed that we needed assistance. She did produce new keys and suggested we go back and try them. We countered with the suggestion that another staff person come with us in case the third set( we had been given a second set upon learning at check in that the first set did not work). We understand that every once in a while things break. It makes it easier to accept in a 4-5 star resort when staff apologies and provide a genuine willingness to make things right

Nice spa, good golf, ok restaurant

Posted May 5, 2013
This is a beautiful location. Our suite right off the check-in area was enormous. Spa services are excellent. The golf course is good. The food in the restaurants was nothing special. The staff coud have been a little more cheery. A bit too "New England reserved" for my tastes.

Broken toilet leads to broken Christmas stay

Posted Jan 1, 2013
Pros: Spacious accommodations, beautiful spa, excellent food
Cons: Broken toilet that was never fixed, limited room service menu
Location: Wonderful New England setting with ample cultural and dining options
Our experience at Cranwell was very mixed. Our room, which was actually a suite, was lovely. Breakfast in the Music Room was delicious, and I would very strongly recommend the blueberry pancakes. Meals at Sloane's Tavern were as advertised, and dinner at the restaurant was superb. Rides around the resort were quick and courteous. However, our toilet stopped working three days before we left. Every day we called to have it repaired, and every day we were told a mechanic would see to it, but no one ever repaired it. My husband had to adjust the mechanism in the tank each time we used it by hand. For a luxury hotel this seems absurd, even over the Christmas holiday season!

Loved the Carriage House rooms!

Posted Aug 6, 2012
While the main mansion is beautiful, it smelled a little musty. We stayed in the Carriage House which is new and has very comfortable large rooms. Would definitely recommend the Carriage House. Spa is really nice and grounds are beautiful.

Cranwell--well relaxed

Posted Jun 5, 2012
We had wanted to go to Cranwell for a long time and decided to for a long weekend getaway for our anniversary. It was immediate heaven. If anyone plays golf, it is a resort set in the course. The grounds are just beautiful as are the architecturally beautiful main buildings. The spa services were wonderful and with Expedia's deal, would be a better deal than Canyon Ranch, just around the corner. It is close to Tanglewood, Jacob's Pillow and numerous local art, historic and music venues. The restaurants at Cranwell are fantastic--whether dining in the mansion's main restauant or the pub Sloane's Tavern on the golf course...with attentive service wherever one dines. If staying in one of the farther buildings from the center of Cranwell, there is a shuttle service that is available with a phone call. The townhouse where we stayed was very spacious, quiet and private with a huge double-sink bathroom, separate sitting room and deck out back. It is an easy two hour drive from Boston and most of New England, and from NYC, it is probably 3+ hours, but well worth the trip.

Don't go there!

Posted Sep 2, 2011
Exterior pictures and landscaping leads you to believe this will be a lovely place to stay. Not! We were put in the "Cottage". The minute you open the door you have a feeling you might be in trouble. Musty dark green carpet, your grandma's lace curtains, faded cranberry colored silk flower arrangements and wall paper border to match. Then you climb the three flights to your room and there in lies the same. The bed was hard, the pillows were minimal and skimpy, the sheets were rough and of some course weave. The air conditioner blew out a musty odor. That musty green carpet was there also. Need I say more. The second night ( yes, we stayed - everything else was booked!), they put a family of many children in two separate rooms on either side of us. Now there was no connecting door so the doors slammed every two minutes until I talked to a clueless mother. Now a well run establishment would have placed this family in connecting room accommodations. There in lies the true issue, the management does know how to provide a quality hotel experience.

I was impressed with the beauty surrounding the hotel.

They charged my room three times to my credit card, one time on May 13, and two times on May 23. I only stayed for Sunday and Monday.

Wonderful relaxed vacation

Posted Apr 21, 2011
Surprised my husband w/ a weekend getaway and we were both pleasantly surprised at how great it was. Our room was huge (stayed in the Founders Cottage). Didn't have to go outside in the cold to get to the spa. Spa treatments were fantastic. Dinner and breakfast at the Mansion were wonderful. Atmosphere for dinner was romantic, as if you were back in time, but with modern fare. Host was very knowledgeable about the wine list and the service was terrific. Would go back again.
