Right on the money

Have to say the staff at the hotel are awesome. Most of the staff understand some English and can help out finding places around the area and general inquiries. Our group of 5 stayed at the hotel for 10 nights during the beginning of May (during busy Golden Week). The hotel shower was a bathroom was a bit small for myself being taller. Someone 6'3'' or less can easily fit as far as height goes. Some rooms have dedicated A/C units while others share the buildings A/C. Problem there is that if another room says its too cold they will turn the A/C off :P But they were able to get our room a comfortable temperature after some fiddling with the thermostat. While the hotel does not have a safe, out our group of 5 that went nothing was stolen and they also offered to lock anything important in a locked room behind the main entrance counter downstairs in tamper-proof envelopes. Each day when you leave the hotel, you have to hand in your room key and they will give it back when you return. (It's just a key on a big fob) The staff are really good at remembering their guests so no worries about getting the wrong key. My bed was a little old and hard to sleep on and so was my friends bed which had a spring sticking out on the side, but once Golden Week had finished the staff ordered some new beds for us so sleep on. The other 3 people had comfortable beds. No bugs or pests. Overall, for the price we paid it was right on the money.

Small but adequate.

Nice and cheap. Good for tourists if all you need is a place to sleep. Room was quite small but suited our requirements. Close to Ueno Staion which makes it easy to travel to the Airport & central Tokyo.

Superb Location

The hotel staff was very friendly and went out of their way to make sure everything was in right order. While the room wasn't all that big, I imagine it's on par for other places in Tokyo. What set it apart was the location. It's within easy walking distance of everything in Ueno, including the train station, lively night market and everything Ueno Park has to offer. It's hard to beat the price for the convenience. I would definitely stay again if I'm ever in Tokyo again.

difficult to find in a back alley. I've seen small hotel rooms in Japan but nothing like this!!! A little pricey for what you get. wouldn't stay here again.

Convenient connectivity, English speaking lady
Posted Jan 5, 2013
Stay at new tohuku was a good experience. The most important part was connectivity. The hotel is just 5 minutes walk from Ginza metro line station entry. The lady who is available during day time was english speaking and very friendly. Even though the check-in is at 2:00 PM ( or 3:00 ) they offered us the room at 10:00 AM when it was available. They had umbrellas for us to take out, let us use microwave in the kitchen area, even came out to say good bye. The room was comfortable and cozy. I would have loved it a little bigger.

Hard to find, but nice enough

The street where this hotel is located would hardly count as an alley in most American cities, and there's no signage to indicate that you're in the right place until you actually arrive at the front door. Make sure to bring your GPS or a highly detailed map if you expect to find it. That said, once we found the hotel, it was a delightful little place to stay. The staff were friendly and helpful, though they didn't all speak English. They offer a very nice traditional Japanese breakfast if you reserve a spot the night before.
