Ideal base for exploring south Wales, local pubs, restaurants and superb fish and chip takeaway.

Non existent staff. Not contactable by phone.

Posted Jul 8, 2014
Pros: Nothing.
Cons: A hotel where the people who run it can be contacted.
Location: No idea - we never got there.
Rang initially to ask what was available for breakfast and noone answered the phone so we decided to cancel and again no one answered and we left a message which was not answered. We rang Expedia and it was jointly agreed that the reservation should be cancelled. How could we stay at a place with no staff, noone to man the telephone, and Mario Thompson is a totally blind man. Expedia agreed thatey would arrange for us to be reimbursed. We have used Expedia before for hotels in India and these have been excellent and this was our first excursion into booking an English hotel with Expedia. Please do something about this - it leaves a very bad taste in the mouth. Judith and Mario Thompson.

OK just for B&B

Posted Jul 3, 2014
Pros: Price
Cons: Previous visit , bustling thriving, excellent meals, full of flowers outside and inside. Lighter. Weed forecourts, change flickering light bulbs etc
Location: Monmouthshire beautiful county. Easy access to beautiful countryside, castles, market towns. Usk=river walks, character pubs, watch cricket.
Clean room, basic breakfast cereals/toast/full English. Public rooms especially bar very dark decor and light, unappealing, created unwelcoming ambiance so did not eat dinner or have a drink. Place felt 'unloved'.

Work in Progress

Pros: Peace and quiet.
Cons: The bar/restaurant area was too dark. Improvement in staff.
Location: Very quiet location. Usk is a pretty town/village. Good location for outdoor activities such as walking & cycling.
Hotel is in an isolated location ~2 miles east of Usk. Bar & restaurant area a bit sparse. I didn't dine on site (except breakfast) so couldn't comment about the food. There were other people dining while I was there. The room was tidy and clean & the bathroom had recently been renovated/updated. However whilst there the cleaner was sacked & the manager/chef walked out. The owner had to return & continue the running of the inn. Would recommend but with reservations about some aspects of the place.

Beds good Service good food excellent. Only disappointment was the instant coffee and tea without a teapot. It is the only place I have stayed in where there is no coffee machine.

Rat trap feb 2013

Stayed one night on business. Generally ok but needs some work to be up to the standard of nearby pub/hotels at a similar price. I was told it recently changed hands and they're working on it

Provided everything needed. Wfi switched off at 11.30pm unfortunately as I was planning next days visit and route. Bed clean and comfortable excelent shower and bathroom. Close to motorway junction but far enough away to be noise free. Pleasent countryside view from bedroom window.

The Rat Trap inspite of it's name, rates as one of the best hotels I've had the pleasure to stay at.So much so that we decided to stay a second night. The building, a fluorescent pink ! stands out in the green countryside. From the moment we entered we were impressed by the decor and quality of the furnishings. the reception was efficient and professional. The bedroom was excellent from all points of view. The restaurant offers a varied menu and a very good wine list. Our chosen meal was excellent. The breakfast was good and efficiently served. We found the staff friendly and efficient, and will certainly return there.
