"A gem!"
We loved Il Colto! It is just a few blocks south of the city entrance. There is a beautiful front yard garden with stunning views of San G. There is also a front patio with chairs and tables to use - also with a beautiful view of the rolling Tuscan hillside.

"Lovely hotel in perfect location"
Family of four spent one night in SG after a brief visit to Florence enroute back to our villa in Umbria. Rooms were spacious and clean. The location is in main square (Piazza del Cisterna) and much to our surprise we awoke to find the market setting up right in front of the hotel. Breakfast on the terrace was wonderful and service quite pleasant. Took our teenage kids up the tallest tower (Torre Grossa) which was right around the corner and well worth the 10 min stair hike. Had a very nice dinner on the terrace at Le Vecchie Mura (make sure you ask for a table close to the railing). Views are spectacular. Food was simple but well prepared and tasty. Very reasonably priced.

"Beautiful building in picture perfect surroundings"
Our much awaited stay in a Bed and Breakfast in Tuscany was not disappointing. We were warmly welcomed, our room was lovely. The surrounding area was delightful. We had no need to go anywhere....even to return to San G. We decided to spend the precious time around the magnificence residence. Such care has been taken in restoration. Although the light was perhaps not the kindest we still managed to take photos and whilst hiding around a corner I finally was able to do a small water colour painting. At last a little goal reached in Tuscany. The evening meal was not to be missed though one did need to be pushed back to the room.

"WEI would like to go back"
Fantastic location in the historic center of this incredible, fantastic medieval town. You can drive to the front of the residences to load and unload the luggage but cannot park in the town. Parking lots are about 10-15 blocks from the building. The host, Rosetta, is a lovely young lady very nice and ready to help at any time.

"A wonderful hotel with excellent staff"
Myself, son (17) and daughter (24) recently stayed over Easter for 8 nights. The hotel staff are an asset, particularly in the bar and restaurant, with their excellent customer service. The hotel was immaculate, and the shower a dream after busy days sight seeing. We found Colle Di Va D'Elsa a good central location for drives out to San Gimignano, Florence, Certaldo, Siena and touring round Chianti Country. We also drove from this base to Pisa and a little piece of paradise....the open air spa pools at Saturnia. I would recommend booking a Junior Suite as the use of the pool and sauna are included in the price. The benefit of free parking, 2 minutes walk away was a bonus, not offered by many hotels in the region. It was our first trip to Tuscany and what a wonderful trip we had - the scenic drives are embedded in my memory!

"Incredible Agriturismo, highly recommend"
We stayed at Torrachia de Chiusi in August 2012 and had an absolutely wonderful experience. You can see and feel the history in this magical, peaceful place. It seems very real and authentic and yet it has many modern amenities including WiFi and air conditioning (critical in August)! Grace is delightful and is happy to help with whatever you need. The cooking class with Bruno is a hoot. We had a great time despite the heat – picking fresh herbs from around the grounds, chopping the ingredients for dinner and even getting a sample of homemade bruschetta fresh out of the oven with a glass of vino – also made onsite of course. Stefano the owner was happy to show us his personal residence and views from the tower. We did the hike into San Gimignano, which took about 1:45 and wound through vineyards, up and down the hills of tuscanny and over a small creek – we HIGHLY recommend. The staff helped us get a taxi back to the Torrachia in the afternoon. After a long day of hiking and touring, the refreshingly cool pool was fantastic! The best views of Tuscanny and San Gimigiano right from the pool. The only slight disappointment was that the room with the terrace had an interior courtyard view – not the best view of the surrounding hills. But given the history, authenticity, and the incredibly nice staff, this was very easy to get over. Bottom line – we would absolutely highly recommend staying here.

"A great spot for visiting San Gimignano"
Lovely and well maintained with all mod cons. Only a few miles from San Gimignano. If you are not planning to use the kitchen facilities of the room that is also where the best bet for a meal would be. Best to arrive before nightfall as (although there is a rather large sign) the road which leads to the property would be easy to miss the first time.

"Country Peace and Quiet at its Best"
We used this beautiful country home and vineyard as our headquarters in Tuscany. We drove around all the great cities of San Gimiano, Montereggioni, Siena, and many others, and came back to this delightful place to rest and enjoy a cooling off period in the great pool I can't recommend the staff enough for their attentiveness and help. The accommodations were great and very comfortable. If you like a place away from tourists and love to hear the sound of country quietness, this is the place.

"Wonderful, peaceful getaway!"
Wow! This place was amazing! The staff were extremely nice and made us feel welcome, the scenery was gorgeous, with a beautiful view of San Gimginano in the distance (especially at night), the room was spacious and comfortable, and we loved going up to the main house to eat dinner on the terrace in the evenings. I cried when I left because it felt like home. Highly recommended (although not with babies! We had a baby crying the first night in the room next to us and this kind of place should be peaceful-my only complaint-and luckily only for one night)

"Great base for touring Tuscany"
We had a great holiday based at "the old paper mill", whizzing around Tuscany in Florence (our hired Fiat 500 who did sterling work up and down and around the hills and winding roads). Colle is a good base if you prefer to stay in "real" Italy, and is close enough to the touristy bits (Siena, San Gimignano, Volterra etc) for days out. The hotel staff are great - friendly and helpful, and they didn't laugh at my amateur Italiano! Our room was clean and comfy with a lovely view of the old town.

Pocket Guide: Val d'Elsa, Siena Winery Hotels

The River Elsa cuts northwards from its source in the hills west of Siena before joining the Arno. Colle di Val d’Elsa is the main centre along its Sienese upper reaches, noted for its glass industry. Some 95 percent of Italy’s lead crystal hails from here, and the lower town is crammed with shops selling its wares. The upper town is set along a winding ridge, and full of historic interest. Several museums showcase Etruscan and Sienese art.
