Fantastic family getaway

Incredible location on the amazing Lake Como. The Lakeview rooms are definitely worth the extra expense. The pool is a delight in August (really really hot in Italy!). Varenna is a delightful small village. What a way to get away from the heat of Rome. Very quiet. Definitely recommend.

Reasonable hotel, not really 4-star

Posted Nov 6, 2012
Pros: Large room, nice casual restaurant, had character.
Cons: No blackout curtains, shutters not adequate to block very bright street lighting. Pillows hard and uncomfortable.
Location: Good location in main town square, a short walk from waterfront. About 15 minutes from train station. Near chiming church tower.
This was a perfectly good hotel and we may stay again. However, it did not meet my expectations of a four-star hotel. Certain things seemed to be lacking, such as tissues in the bathroom, a dedicated bathmat (though plenty of hand towels to use as a substitute), adequate pillows (because flat and hard we needed two each, but there were only three in the room not four and that was because we happened to be put in a triple and could use the pillow from the single bed), and I noticed that the mirror and light fittings in the bathroom were dusty. The room lamps were dim and there were not enough of them. Conversely, the outside lights were bright all night and it was a good thing I had an eye mask. While awake we could clearly hear the nearby church clock tower chiming each hour/half hour despite closed windows, but it did not wake us after we were asleep. We ate in the hotel restaurant - the gourmet restaurant was closed but my husband preferred the more casual grill restaurant anyway and we had good, large meals. Breakfast was a reasonable continental (no hot foods) but the selection seemed limited for a 4-star hotel. Staff were the best thing about this hotel, we were given a useful tourist package with map and information upon arrival, and the lady on reception was helpful in answering our questions.
