Room Amenities
Dining
A complimentary buffet breakfast is provided each morning.
Bar Carlton Cafe - Leaded-glass windows facing promenade along Grand Canal. Silver-trimmed, 18th-century Venetian-style chairs with plush-fabric upholstery, opening onto the outdoor terrace when the weather permits. Serves espresso, snacks, and cocktails.
Recreation
The Lido of Venice, the slender, 11.5-km-long (7.25-mile-long) island facing the Adriatic Sea located a 15-minute waterbus ride east of central Venice, is the city's playground, especially in summer when beaches and watersports draw visitors and Venetians. Year-round, visitors rent bicycles to explore the island, play golf, or take horseback rides. Aside from fishing in the canals, the central city offers little in the way of recreational opportunities. Deep-sea fishing is available in the Adriatic Sea.
The recreational activities listed below are available either on site or near the hotel; fees may apply.

“Venice in November”
The location of the hotel was perfect. Cross the bridge, and you can catch a vaporetto (ferry) to nearby landmarks or to St. Lucia train station that connects you to Florence and Rome. Hotel building is old, but then everything is old in Venice. If you don't expect U.S. 4-star hotel quality, you'll be satisfied with this hotel's location and comfort. The room and bath water were well heated for late November stay.
“Not Impressed”
the rooms where far too small and too noisy for the price I paid.
“Hotel Carlton needs upgrades!”
Stayed at Hotel Carlton to complete a 10 day vacation with family. The hotel is located on the Grand Canal of Venice, Italy. Great Location...OLD Hotel. Rooms were small but clean. Free Wi-Fi in lounge/bar area not in guest rooms. hotel staff were great! it just needs to be upgraded. You are paying for the location only.
“Nice, clean, quaintly furnished hotel across from Santa Lucia Train Station”
My wife and I stayed at the Hotel Carlton on the Grand Canal Aug 5-7 2011. We were overall very pleased with this hotel and would be happy to stay there again. The hotel is located directly across the Grand Canal from the Santa Lucia train station in Venice. Getting to the hotel from the train station simply involves going across a bridge (Note that like most bridges in Venice, this bridge has steps - pack light!!!). The hotel is very clean and does have a nice ambiance. Our room was comfortable but small. The room was equipped with a fridge mini-bar and a safe. The decor in the room was rather quaint - supposedly trying to recreate ancient Venetian decor. The bed was comfortable enough. No problems with the bathroom, toilet or showers. The buffet breakfast was adequate - not spectacular. Front desk staff was friendly and helpful. One idiosyncrasy is that they use actual keys instead of key cards. So you have to turn in your keys when you leave the hotel and pick them up on your return. It is about a 40 min walk from the hotel to St. Mark's Square but it is a pleasant walk with lots of stores and restaurants en route. The "water-bus" dock is close to the hotel as well, so alternatively, you can take a water-bus. The only negative aspect of our stay was the poor internet service. We paid for 24 hrs of "high speed" internet which turned out to be much slower than a dial up and so virtually useless. Ironically, we later discovered we could get FREE WiFi in the lobby.
“Venice Grand Canal”
Lovely hotel with excellent staff. It's conveniently located right across from the train station so it's very easy to get to, other than having to drag your suitcases up and down the stairs of the bridge. We booked 3 different rooms. One with a stunning view of the canal, one triple, and one dbl. The view room was beautifully appointed with Italian furnishings, but the toilet didn't work very well, they did come quickly to fix it. The other rooms were small, clean, well maintained by european standards. Beds are firm, comfortable and there are extra blankets and pillows if needed. It is a distance from the Rialto and San Marcos, but it makes it more relaxing being away from the busy areas. Besides, the public taxis are very convenient and a lot of fun to take. The staff were pleasant, helpful, and courteous. The laundry service was excellent, they cleaned and pressed my clothing beautifully. Ethernet service only in rooms, but wifi avail at the bar next door, also very accomodating. Vendors outside the hotel are less expensive than San Marcos and Rialto. Good european breakfast, warm and cold food served, fresh fruit. I love this hotel because it's so convenient, walking distance to the buses to the airport or other cities and train station across the way.
“Great Place to Stay in Venice”
This is a lovely old hotel, excellently maintained. The room size was a bit small, but we were only in for 2 nights and didn't spend much time in the room anyway. The view on the Grand Canal is great.
“Its a keeper.”
We would do it again. very close to entrance by car or buss. Staff very helpful, Recently remodled, and very good brunch included. Excellent resturant and bar. Also sidewalk tables on the Grand Canal. We loved it.
“Very mediocre”
For the price, you're better off staying closer to San Marco or the Rialto. The hotel is also very dated and feels staid. Was probably nice in the 1980s. The bathroom was very bare and had old floors. Also, the breakfast was not good. Skip it and have an espresso on the street,
“Not a bad place for the money”
The lobby and breakfast area are beautiful! The rooms are nicely decorated, but very small and somewhat in need of renovation....The beds were not very comfortable, but it was not the worst either....The staff was extremely helpful...and Marco gave a great recommendation for dinner....I think the name of it was Zanze???? it is left out of the hotel, and just before the bridge, turn left and it is on the left.....30 Euro price fix that was simple and deliocious, with great atmosphere For the money and the location we would stay here again.....
“Great location across the river from the Station”
Hotel and location was great. But struggled to carry/pull my 50lbs of luggage up and down the steps of two big bridges from the station - no ramps on any bridges in Venice! Travel light - those bridges are a nightmare to carry luggage over The hotel also misplaced our key twice on the same day, saying that we must have not given it in - when we did! Since they found it on the wrong room number. Reception staff could have been a bit more friendly. Apart from that it was nice room.

Santa Croce, Venice, Italy: At the start of the Grand Canal, Santa Croce is set immediately across from the bus station and railway station. It is a peaceful quarter adjacent to, but largely unaffected by the visitor hubbub. The picturesque Ponte degli Scalzi is a great place for watching the busy canal traffic and there are many fines churches to explore off the beaten tourist track. The Rialto Bridge is only a 10-minute walk or boat ride away.
