Great old hotel close to the beach!Posted Nov 11, 2013
The complimentary water shuttle to Saint Marks was over handy. All the employees in the hotel were fantastic! Guest services were impeccable.

Non Millionaire point of viewPosted Nov 7, 2013
Pros: Everything! Large bathrooms, great views, and romantic. Big two thumbs up to our waiter named Matias La Cognata; he is the best! Great job Matias!
Cons: WIFI was inconsistent; could have been weak signals. TV could use English speaking channel besides the news when lounging around; news gets old quick!
Location: Even though we picked this room for the rate and space its right on beach and 15 min boat ride to San Marco Square. Lots of shopping, eating and art.
This review is from someone who normally wouldn't be able to stay in a resort like this. My wife and I decided to skip the typical Caribbean destination for something different. We spent our 20th anniversary in Venice and stayed at the Excelsior after reading hotel reviews for months. This is a normal middle class American perspective for those of you like me who are spending more money than they can afford to experience the dream trip here and don't want to be disappointed. Overall, this place is great! Tips: watch the rates for months, they do go up and down. It's a very nice room, but you spend very little time here. Remember that your in Venice and everything shuts down after 9pm. People in Venice are not rude, they are sweet and passionate people. You need at least 3 days to get use to the city and how to get around. If you are going to Burano and Murano allow for a half day at least. Public transportation is the cheapest way to get around. Do not leave without a Gondola ride and a singing gondolier. Pick your Gondolier carefully because some rides are more romantic than others (ask them to show you their route). Everything is expensive in Venice ($80-100/meal) so stock up on goods at the local grocery store to keep in your room and backpack; you'll see $8-$10 items (Pringles) that we get at the $1 store in the states. Get a map right away, they are free at front desk. We never felt unsafe. Enjoy every min. because when its over, you will think you woke up from a dream!

A DisappointmentPosted Nov 3, 2013 on Hotels.com
Really disappointed. We had booked this for our honeymoon. The staff were cold and concerned about obtaining my email address for marketing purposes. Our room door handle broke and the checkout systems were down when leaving. The building is beautiful but the style of décor looked dated. The hotel did not have an ATM. The air conditioning was off; it was extremely hot inside the room. Maintenance said to open the windows, which we did. They forgot to mention the mosquitoes; we spent the night swatting them. It was miserable. I would not recommend this hotel or stay here again. We have stayed at other luxury hotels in Venice that were a much better. After booking hotels online for years, this will be the first hotel for which I will have to leave a poor review.

Hotel Excelsior, Venice, ItalyPosted Oct 26, 2013
Pros: The hotel provided a water taxi service to San Marcos Square. It was convenient to travel to the center of Venice for shopping and dining.
Cons: It was low season which limited the number of neighborhood restaurants that were opened for service.
Location: The location is away from the busy section of Venice, not congested, very quiet, peaceful, overlooking the ocean.
The hotel staff provided excellent service. It is truly rated as a five-star hotel. The breakfast buffet was very good. It was an excellent location for relaxation. The hotel overlooked the beach. The rooms were spacious and had nice furnishings.

Venerable landmark overcomes agePosted Oct 24, 2013
Pros: Quiet nights. Large comfortable rooms.
Cons: Restaurant greatly overpriced and nearly empty even in high season October, but unlikely to be "improved" by reducing price.
Location: Very little to do nearby. In fact, nothing to do at all. So take the boat to Venice.
Vast, spreading Moorish banquet not quite successful in also appearing warm and inviting. Faded photos of long-forgotten movie stars - mostly from 1950s - need either updating or replacement. About 1.5 miles from Pza S. Marco with hourly free launch a benefit, although neither the rooms overlooking the street (very noisy) or across the lagoon particularly advantageous. Best rooms in quiet courtyards with soothing fountains. Prices often lower than luxury hotels in Venice proper, but hotel also popular meeting site, thus be advised accordingly.

Good hotel that makes a guest comfortablePosted Oct 23, 2013
Pros: I like that it is modern, refurbished, the bathrooms are great and large, and the taxi runs all the time taking you in and out of venice
Cons: Off season the air conditioning is turned off and you have to sleep with the windows open, and air out the room everytime you return to cool
Location: Trattoria Favorita and Andri Restaurant are two of the great restaurants on the Lido. Take a walk at night to get Gelati in the lido
the private water taxi is a great asset as it is easy to get to and from Venice, except you might get caught during the dinner or lunch break where the taxi doesn't run. The Blue bar is great for a glass of wine overlooking the Adriatic, and the ability of the concierge to make restaurant bookings for you is great.

Probably the best hotel you will ever stay in.Posted Oct 18, 2013
Pros: Water taxi to Venice. Really helpful staff. Comfortable room. Cleanliness.
Cons: It would have been great if the swimming pool had been available.
Although the hotel is not situated in the heart of Venice with the complimentary water taxi it is just a short hop to the hustle and bustle of St Marc's Square. Beautiful walks along the beach straight from the hotel. Superb staff. Unfortunately the swimming pool was shut for the winter but that would have been the icing on the cake.

Amazing HotelPosted Oct 14, 2013
Pros: Large comfortable rooms, friendly staff
Location: Location just a short complimentary water bus ride to St Marks Square, great beach location away from the crowds if you fancy a break from site seeing
We had read the mixed reviews before we went to this hotel, but have to say that we enjoyed every minute of our stay. The room was very spacious and immaculately clean. The location was just perfect, the staff could not do enough for us. The only thing I would say is that the drinks and food were a bit expensive but then Venice itself is expensive!! We had a brilliant holiday and would definately reccomend this hotel

Classic hotel, beach front locationPosted Oct 12, 2013 on Hotels.com
Classic elegance that still needs some updating. Beach front location would have been great if the weather was nice, and our view was fantastic! Staff was friendly, especially Sara in guest relations who gave us great tips on getting around Venice. Hotel shuttles run on the hour (with 2 hr breaks for lunch/dinner) so planning time is essential. We found the shuttle rides fun, but takes extra time, may not be for everyone. You need to plan for expensive private water taxi if going to and from the airport unless you want to deal with public transportation. Shuttle takes you right to St. Marks Square, the heart of Venice. Free wifi was nice amenity but a bit slow. Hair dryers in the room need to be updated, they are the old on the wall models and the door to our balcony was badly in need of repair. Easy to see how in it's prime this was a hollywood destination and the classic elegance and charm is still there we would consider staying here again.
