Heart of the cityPosted Mar 3, 2015
Location: we were only a 1/2 hour drive from the Butchart gardens, which are a must see.
The hotel amenities are first rate. there is a wide selection of restaurants within the hotel. We didn't get a chance to try the poll or sauna - that's for the next visit.

A memorable weekendPosted Feb 26, 2015
Pros: Perfect location, history and good staff.
Location: You are in walking distance of transportation, museums, galleries, shopping and dining. Perfect.
We spent a lovely Valentine's Day weekend in Victoria and our stay at the Fairmont Empress could not have been better. We were centrally located, our room was very comfortable and the staff was gracious and knowledgable. They gave us good advice on restaurants and getting around town. I would stay there on any visit to Victoria.

Bengal Lounge was the highlight!Posted Feb 25, 2015
Pros: The reputation of Fairmont hotels - grandeur and quality. Location. The Bengal Lounge was the highlight for me.
Cons: The guestroom itself was disappointingly worn, particularly for the room rate. One concierge was miserable, the others compensated for him generously.
Location: Nautical Nellies is an excellent casual restaurant with great seafood. Rebar Cafe great for lunch - buy their cookbook! Walks along ocean.
We spent four glorious days in Victoria. Pink blossoms on the trees, crocuses in the park and long walks beside the ocean with friends were rejuvenating for us. The Curry Bar was spectacular and the live jazz in contrast with the colonial vibe of the Bengal Lounge made for an exotic and enchanting evening. The room was spacious and the bed was comfortable, however the overall dinginess was disappointing each time we walked into the room. We expected grand, in keeping with the rest of the hotel, and met dowdy soiled upholstery and slouchy chairs, scratched furniture, and chipped paint. We heard they are renovating. We would ask to be in a renovated room next time.

This is not a cheap hotel by any standards, but you do get what you pay for. The staff was professional and helpful and the accommodations were superb. The food is excellent and the restaurant staff attentive, without being over-bearing.

Pretty hotel but extra fee for everything!Posted Feb 23, 2015
Pros: The Empress is a gorgeous landmark hotel. It's lovely inside and out and the staff were very courteous and helpful.
Cons: The hotel needs to stop charging ridiculous fees for every service (parking, Wifi, local calls, etc.) which should be included in the room price.
Location: Royal BC Museum and Parliament Buildings are across the street and the tourist shopping on Government Street is a quick walk away.
The Empress is a gorgeous landmark hotel. It's lovely inside and out and the staff were very courteous and helpful. The hotel is not an inexpensive place to stay in Victoria but the location is very convenient. However, despite paying a premium price to stay there, the hotel charges an extra fee for EVERYTHING!!! There's a fee for parking (even if you do it yourself), a fee for Wifi internet, a fee to make a local phone call, etc. Fees, fees, fees! It was really aggravating for such a nice hotel (and chain) to nickel and dime you for everything that should be included in the room price. You can walk outside the hotel and use the free downtown Wifi that Victoria provides (as does Starbucks, Tim Hortons, restaurants, etc.) but the Fairmont can't provide this service to its guests without charging $15.00/day??? Don't even get me started on the room service prices! And despite paying a premium price for our room, we were given a room with a view of the hotel loading docks and dumpsters. If you just want to experience staying at the Empress and don't mind paying fees on top of fees, then go for it. We've done it once now and won't be doing it again.

Pros: Absolutely the reception desk and every staff member we encountered went way above the anticipated service level we had expected.
Cons: Perfection is a difficult aspect to achieve, but we were so pampered during our stay that we could not think of anything to change.
Location: The hotel is right in the middle of almost every attraction that Victoria offers, including museums, the I-max, Provincial Legislature, entertainment.
All staff were particularly helpful, especially on reception. We only had one night to stay and unfortunately the dining room was closed for the evening meal. There was an alternative available in the Bengal Lounge, but we wanted to celebrate a special occasion with a nice Chateau Briand for two. The reception staff checked if it could be done specially for us. The chef did not have the appropriate meat available for our request, but the reception staff telephoned around to about six fine restaurants in the vicinity and located one that had it on the menu, made reservations for us and supplied a limo to take us to and from our excellent meal.

Impeccable Service in the Perfect LocationPosted Feb 9, 2015
Pros: Service, location and the Gold Floor breakfast. Also, Great Spa Treatments
Cons: a bit out-dated. hallways are very 1930'ish
Location: Restaurants and bars are all strolling distance. The museum is next door (with IMAX) and Fisherman's Wharf is a 5 minute walk.
The GOLD FLOOR was incredible. The staff's level of service was outstanding. The decor is a bit out-dated but that was also the charm. The hotel is perfectly located (make sure you get a room with a view of the harbor) and walk into town.

Great locationPosted Jan 28, 2015
Pros: Atmosphere and cleanliness.
Cons: A historical tour of the hotel would be really interesting.
Location: Close to many major attractions downtown and some great little walks around the city.
Great staff. We were there off season so Empress dining room was closed and pool was closed - would liked to have known that prior to booking.

We had a great stay at the fairmont, staff was friendly. The food is a bit expensive but it was really good and you can't beat the atmosphere.
