A bit isolated, but wholesomePosted Apr 6, 2013
Pros: Common area, patio, view of the city
Cons: Room size would be pretty intimate for two, but so are cruise ships.
Location: A bit far from the heart of town, need to plan on lots of walking and finding transport. For gods sake, don't drive!
I think the hotels in Valpo probably should be evaluated with the itself. As this was my first trip to Chile, and after having spent several nights in the best hotel in South America , some expectation setting is in order. Not ever having been in a 1st to 2nd world country, I had no idea what to expect. Valpo is a much more gritty town than Santiago. Finding this place, even with an iPad GPS, was almost impossible. There is zero logic.. The neighborhood is a mix of decay and hidden wealth. The interior is like Chile, working hard to be e best it can be. The main area is a welcome relief after driving. The parking lot is okl, if not rough, but your car is safe. The room was the Superior, and definitely smaller than I hoped. I was ok with scaling my impressions to Santiago. I don't know if that is the custom,I'm not an experienced world traveler. The distance to the old town of Valpo was not excessive. About 10 minutes walk through a pretty average area. The breakfast service was simple, with the option of having it in the room. Valpo is noise, barking dogs and traffic horns.AIs far as Ultramar is far from be the middle of this, I was glad. Internally the walls are not thick. As it was the first REAL place I saw in Chiile. I don't want to rate the hotel based on that. I was glad I found it, I felt safe, and they would fix anytihng that i found bad. I felt a bit far the action. The taxis there are many, but as I driove myself, I was already a bit shaken by the traffic.

Ultramar - will come backPosted Mar 27, 2012 on Hotels.com
It's a very nice hotel with most welcomming staff and excellent service. The only point are the rooms, they are very very small.

Hotel UltramarPosted Sep 9, 2011 on Hotels.com
For the price, this is a great hotel. The interior of the hotel looks like it's recently been remodeled. The staff is kind and speaks english. The room was small but everything was clean and looked to be very new. The hotel is an old building and looks it from the outside. The hotel has a patio with great views of the city and habor. The hotel does sit on a hill so it's a bit of a walk to get to anything. They do have the collectivos which are cheap and frequent.

Hotel Ultramar delivers on contemporary style and charm. Staff are friendly and helpful. Views are hard to beat. I just can't get over that first sleepless night due to persistent dog barking nearby. Dogs barked periodically on the next two nights - not as bad, but not really conducive to the peace and rest that seem to be promised by the style and price of the hotel. I'm not sure any other locations in Valpo can promise the quiet I'd hoped for (there are strays everywhere), but this might be an argument for visiting Valpo in the day and sleeping in the more orderly Vina del Mar. Another downside of Hotel Ultramar for some - teeny tiny bathrooms.
