Recommended: Great stay! You do need a car but you will want to go to the volcano, the waterfalls, different beaches, shopping and maybe even Parker Ranch. Kailua-Kona is about 45 min. away. The stay was a little spendy! For dinner, the "Coast Grille" was excellent. Try the Mahi Mahi or the fish of the day. Split a salad if you want. The service was excellent! I don't think we have ever stayed where the staff was genuine, friendly and helpful. We are not golfers but the course was right there and beautiful. The beach was sandy for swimming and rocks off to one side for snorkling. One day, the surf was bringing in big waves, fun to watch but not recommended for swimming. A small town about 5 miles away with a couple of restaurants to try. We enjoyed "El Pesto." The room had a small refrigerator, the bathroom was huge, king bed in room; ocean view was acceptable; and slept to the sound of the surf. Very quiet and enjoyable! See all reviews for this hotel

Recommended: The Orchid is a refined and serene retreat surrounded by the dramatic lava fields of this side of the big island. It is "old style" but classic and beautiful. The food is excellent. We ate breakfast twice, nice menu with choices for every taste. One evening four of us sampled nearly every item on the appetizer menu at the terrace overlooking the gardens and everything surpassed expectations. We enjoyed that so much that we ate at Brown's Beach House the following night. All delightful. Our only disappointment was the murky waters of the lagoon and the bay beyond. We like to snorkel and swim and the ocean beyond the Fairmont was not a good place for that. The ballroom bathrooms are the most beautiful I have seen anywhere! We would all go back. Recommended: We went for our anniversary. Originally we had selected a garden room, but upgraded @ check-in to a beach-front room. The view was beautiful & peaceful. Hotel staff were very friendly & helpful in every area. I didn't feel the prices were unreasonable (this is a resort in Hawaii). Overall an excellent experience, and worth it. Highly recommended. Recommended: This hotel was absolutely fantastic. I stayed at the Ritz Carlton in Maui right before we came to the Mauna Kea and this hotel by far outclassed the Ritz in every way. The place is beautiful, great architecture and the beach is unreal. The staff was so pleasant and helpful - This was a 5 star service hotel even though I think it only shows 4 stars. I will only stay at the Mauana Kea when I come back to the big island. See all reviews for this hotel
