“Okay by day, buggy at night”

My husband and I were impressed by the cottages two years ago, when we drove down from Kapaa. So, this year, even though it was a bit more than we wanted to pay, I booked us here for two nights. It would allow a leisurely visit to this part of Kauai istead of making it a day trip from our usual stay in Kapaa. A few reviews I had read mentioned 'bugs'. I also called WPC and mentioned that I was worried about bugs; they said that some of their cottages had been renovated and that they hadn't had many complaints about bugs. I booked hoping that we wouldn;t have the problem. We checked in late at night, We were expected and were given keys to the 'Bullshed' cottage and were told that it was newly renovated. I was encouraged. We first had a hard time with the key and locking system and many insectes were waiting to get in through the screen doors so we entered quickly. Unfortunately, we found a cockroach on a bedroom wall, one of many I would find during our two day stay; we only saw them at night. There was also a flea that was under the covers. I swated it off. We managed to sleep okay until 2 am (my son said 5 am) when the roosters started crowing. The grounds were beautifully manicured but I wish that they reworked the screens and gaps between the sliding doors. The next day was fine as we spent time in the nice pool and the town. We read books on the nice wrap around porch. The next evening, more bugs. It's such a shame; we loved the place otherwise.

    Area recommendations
Shrimp Station for shrimp lovers (lunch), Jojo's Shaved Ice (refreshing treat), the coffee shop (a nice lady makes the best custom mocha and hot chocolate) next to the art gallery, Hanapepe Bakery (great looking baked goods and good breakfast place, clean and nice people), both Waimea grocery stores. the Plantation Cottage Restaurant (good.

    “Unique and wonderful Hawaiian vacation”

My wife and I loved this place. The staff we dealt with were great especially Stephanie and Joanie who saw that we had a most memorable stay for which we are grateful. This place is embedded with the spirit of Hawaii. For the independent minded traveler to Hawaii it's a great place to relax and to get in touch with some of the local culture if you want to or to be left alone to enjoy a tropical retreat. We loved the brew pub for great beer, good food and a good place to meet folks and hear local music. You can walk into Waimea town for supplies and not leave the grounds otherwise for a nice stay if you don't want to. For those who do condo style vacations especially families this is the ultimate with your own separate cottage and grounds. For the experienced Hawaii traveler this place is Da Bomb. If you're used to something more managed and manicured you might want to try this place for a change. Highly recommended.

“Stay away - leave it all for me.”

The cottages are a wonderful place to stay. Not particularly fancy or upscale resort, but comfortable and homey in a beautiful non-touristy environment. I can't imagine staying any where else. The resort also has wonderful restaurant!

    “Serenity in paradise”

The Waimea Plantation Cottages were wonderful. We wanted a nice quiet vacation and this is the perfect place for that. The cottages are separated enough so you have your privacy, can enjoy the deck, the beach or just walk around the property under wonderful banyan trees. The birds, chickens and geckos are everywhere. I loved falling asleep to the waves crashing on shore. They maintain the grounds very well.

Definitely go and hike the Waimea Canyon in the morning when the clouds leave dew on your skin.

    “Mixed Review”

Great place to stay if you REALLY want to get away from it all. Far away from most things on the island. It takes 45 min. to drive half way around the island (signals and 25 mph zones), so forget about seeing the East Shore unless you get an early start and take the day. The beach is horrible, the pool is nothing but a hole in the ground, and wi-fi access is only at the main house. The grounds are beautiful, the cottage was nice and comfortable, the people were friendly and helpful. Good place for honeymooners and those who want privacy, but if you have teenagers you'd be better off staying in Poipu or someplace close to there.

“We were not impressed with this hote..”

The location of the hotel was a disappointment. Also the grounds were not well maintained. I slipped on a mango (which were all over the drive and walkways), I was not hurt, but walking on the grounds in the dark was a major hazard. The cottage was quaint but not as advertised in pictures at their website. It was comfortable however. Also there was maid service every third day. I believe it should have been at least every other day because of the poor maintanence of the walkways a lot of dirt and sand was tracked in.

    “Kauai back in the day”

If you are looking for a quiet out of the way place to relax, this is the place. But if you are looking for more action and night life, you should look for someplace on the north shore. Our one bedroom cottage was very rustic and gave us a good idea of how the plantation workers lived back in the day. It's no 5 star hotel, but was comfortable and we enjoyed staying there. The mango tree in the back yard was wonderful and we had fresh mangos daily. While we could not see the beach from the cottage, we could hear the waves at night as we lay in bed. The grounds were beautiful and well manicured. The lobby and veranda were lovely. Some might find the crowing rooster annoying, especially but we found them charming. Truth is, the chickens roam free all over the island, so no matter where you stay, you won't be able to escape them. Overall, we had a great time and enjoyed our cottage very much.

“Kauai's Secret Gem - Will definitely revisit!”

We stayed 4 nights here, and 4 nights at the Westin of Princeville. We look forward to returning to the Aston Waimea Cottages! Everything about our stay there was just perfect. Each morning we would get up early and walk along the beach, and through the plantation gardens - it was incredibly beautiful in the early hours! And, sunset is no worse! The cottages are super cute, too - a bit aged, but in good shape. There were journals from previous guests - many of whom were even locals, looking for a get-a-way from the rat race of the north and east shores. Fresh bananas and mangos grow outside your window. You can hear the waves gently breaking softly. The location is too perfect for exploring the canyon. Great place to see Polihale at sunset, too! Gotta try the Macadamia Nut pancakes with Vanilla Bean syrup from the hotel's restaurant - to die for! And Jo-Jo's shaved ice in the town of Waimea, and the melt-in-your mouth coconut macaroons from the Kauai Granola Company, too! This is the sort of place you go to when you want solitude with somebody you love. We can't wait to return!

    Area recommendations
Polihale State Park (need a jeep or other 4WD vehicle for the "road", but one of the most amazing places to see a sunset I've ever been to). Jo-Jo's shaved ice, downtown Waimea (favorite combo is Passion, Guava, and Mango, with Coconut ice cream at the bottom) Can't get enough of the coconut macaroons from Kauai Granola company in downtown Waimea - free samples of everything there is great, too! On a cloudy day, explore the Alkali Swamp at the end of the Waimea Canyon Drive. Otherwise, if you're able, do the Nualolo-Awaawapuhi loop trail. You'll have better views than from a helicopter, and it will be a lot more peaceful! Kekaha beach is a very nice white sand beach, just a few minutes up the way - wide enough for the whole family to enjoy, with picnic shelters and barbecues, too.
    Getting around
Rent a Jeep - Polihale State Park is worth it alone!
    What to pack
Hiking boots and sandals (not flip flops) to ford streams in.

    “Beautiful Setting-Noisy Roosters”

This place has a beautiful setting and sweet bungalows. The staff was nice at night but not very helpful during the day. Roosters start crowing very early in the morning so beware light sleepers. Ask for a bungalow with a dishwasher. This is a great sleepy area-no highrises around.
