Sofitel Washington Lafayette Square opened as a hotel in 2002 in a late-19th-century building that retains its historic grandeur, with plenty of dark wood, marble, and original works of art throughout the public areas.

The hotel, in downtown Washington, DC, offers six meeting rooms that carry the names of Parisian landmarks (Bastille) and districts (Montmartre). “Great hotel but bed was a rock.”

The Sofitel Hotel in DC was a very nice hotel. I loved everything about it except the bed. Which quality of sleep is a primary reason for rating a staying experience, Sofitel beds were not comfortable at all. At first I thought it was just a problem with me and my bed firmness preference. But my wife and several guests I knew had the same complaint. At first, a guest is given the appearance that the beds are wrap-around sof (like a bed you would find in a W hotel, but find quickly that this is merely an illusion in that beyond the over-stuffed mattress pad is a concrete (not lilterally) slab. My back has yet to recover. Overall the hotel is very nice and the staff are excellent. The lack of comfort of the bed is a deal breaker for me. The location of the hotel adjacent to a park would make me call ahead to make sure mass protesters are not camped there. The surrounding restaurants, especially Starbucks, bathrooms were trashed, nasty and lined with folks using facilities without buying products.

“A very nice place to stay”

The staff at the reception desk and in the restaurant are exceptionally nice and helpful. The business center is free, and located conveniently near the front desk so that they could bring more paper when the printer ran out. Breakfast includes delicious complimentary pastries with your order. The hotel is very convenient to the MacPherson Square Metro station.

“D.C. Hotel”

Very nice hotel. Nice room, great location. Carpet was very worn, room was nice. Maid left cleaning supplies on our table one day. Heat was not working but promptly fixed. Parking pricey, vallet. Front desk staff seemed rushed and not too informative.

“Great location, tiny room”

The location of Sofitel is fabulous and the staff is extremely attentive and helpful. Compared to other hotels in Washington in this price range (Willard, St. Regis, Fairmount) the room was very small with minimal closet and drawer space.

“Some major bumps in the begining”

Arrived at 1:45pm. Requested crib and fridge 2 months prior. After arrival no crib or fridge in the room. Guest services first told us they had no crib to give us. I explained this was not acceptable that they were putting our daughters safety in jeopardy. After a few more conversations and six hours later we finally received the crib and fridge. Management made things right but this should have never been an issue. Very disappointing start to our vacation. We requested room service 3 times. On of these occasions we simply requested 3 plates and silverware. After 45 minutes and nothing delivered I contacted room service again. Of course they had forgotten my request. The final item worth mentioning is turn down service. One night house keeping entered the room for turn down service with the Do Not Disturbed sign on the door. Since our daughter was already put down for bed for the night this was very frustrating. Concierge was very friendly and helpful. Doormen were great and extremely helpful with cabs and directions. Management(Guest services) did make things right but honestly for a luxury hotel you would expect a lot better organization. Would we stay at this hotel again perhaps.

Area recommendations

This is a great area. It's only a couple of blocks to the white house and within walking distance to all attractions.
