Excellent all round & fantastic location
Our host Jerry could not be more charming or helpful. He’s a font of knowledge and nothing is too much trouble. We stayed in places that look more plush, but this was by far superior in every way. Powerful shower, quiet air con and ceiling fan, and the best breakfast.

This property was well maintained and had secure parking. We appreciated that it was only a block to the Main Street and close to shops and restaurants. We enjoyed our stay.

A great stopover, very friendly and convenient too
Phil and Linda made us very welcome and made our stay really enjoyable. We have stayed at the Gumtree previously and will no doubt return. The garden is lovely and there is a pool for cooling off after a long drive. Phil cooks a very good breakfast and Linda's fruit salad is lovely. We would recommend.

Outstanding location in Oudtshoorn - probably the best. Highly recommend. Owners are very helpful at organizing activities, visits, and sightseeing in the area. Outstanding hospitality.

One problem was that the closet to hang clothes was not long enough for dresses, the shower room was quite tired looking

Hello Anonymous, Thank you for your comments. The bathroom in your room was fairly recently tiled, so maybe you are thinking of another guest house? I agree that the hangar area is above one of the luggage racks, so a long dress cannot hang straight there, but you did have other options. You are the first to find this inconvenience worthy of a written complaint in our 9 years here. Unfortunately we are not able to address this in the short term but when we next totally renovate the room, we will take your feedback into consideration.

One of the very best—stay here.
On the road 800+ nights around the world and this is one of the best, in every way. Super location, close but not too close to town—-quiet, beautiful morning birdsong. Clean, very comfortable bed and room—very peaceful, restful sleep. First rate room. Breakfast was superb—locally sourced, fresh juice, excellent cold and hot food, homemade bread. Beautiful breakfast room. And proprietors Phil and Linda all pull off this first rate guesthouse with graciousness and warm hospitality. And very, very interesting and engaging people they both are—just first rate human beings running a first rate guest house. You can’t and won’t go wrong—stay here if you are in or near Outdshoorn. You will be very happy you did.

Pleasant stay.
Our hosts Phil and Linda were very hospitable and helpful. Our room was comfortable and clean. Great breakfast with good choices. Nice swimming pool area to relax around. Walking distance to some restaurants and shops. You have to be a bit careful leaving the premises by car as you are on a downwards slope and it is not to easy to see the traffic. Just a small point.

Great stay in Oudtshoorn
We had an Excellent stay Lin and Phil great hosts, really pointed us in right direction with details of local area. Rooms were big also nice deck and pool to relax around - breakfast was very good, all in all a perfect hotel to explore the local area which loads to offer

A memorable stay and excursion with Phil and Linda
Gumtree Lodge is perfect for a visit to Oudtshoorn and the surrounding areas. Phil and Linda are excellent hosts who are extremely knowledgeable and professional in their approach. Service is first class! The guest house is ideally placed for walking to a range of restaurants and Phil and Linda advised us about these. Breakfast was delicious. Our room was spacious and looked onto the gardens and pool. It had everything we needed. The bar and dining area are very tastefully decorated. There were too many extras to mention. An unforgettable memory is the circular tour through the Schwartberg Pass driven by Phil who provided a really well informed commentary. We would highly recommend this guided tour. We think that we were extremely lucky to have chosen Gumtree Lodge and highly recommend it.

South Africa road trip
We enjoyed returning to this fabulous Guesthouse. Phil and Linda are great hosts and nothing is too much trouble. Oudtshoorn experienced 2 power cuts while we were there and our hosts ensured we were inconvenienced as little as possible. We would highly recommend this gem of a Guesthouse and also a day trip over the Swartberg pass driven by Phil in his 4 x 4.

Though we missed the owners due to annual holiday, Naomi was amazing. She anticipated most of our questions and was very thorough. You can tell she loves Oudtshoorn. She helped us reset our plans after a downpour dampened our chance at Meerkats.

Phil and Linda was fantastic hosts and their beautiful dog domino was lovely. The guest has a relaxed feel about it and feel as though you have known Phil and Linda all yiur kife. Our first drink was complimentary and then tried the local gin which was lovely. Breakfast in the morning was the full Monty as well as toast and local jams and cereals. We would stay again as it was wonderful.

Simply comfortable.
Friendly and welcoming. We arrived after a short drive, but a long day sightseeing, everything was as anticipated. The breakfasts were another success as well. We had good advice on dining out, all within a short stroll.

Phil and Linda were great hosts! They go out of your way to make your stay as comfortable and enjoyable as possible. Excellent accomodation at a very reasonable price
This is a small guest house in a very quiet area of Oudtshoorn. The owners go out of their way to be helpful and recommend activities and restaurants in the local area. Breakfast is excellent with many local and some home made products on offer. One of the most reasonably priced guest houses we stayed in during our holiday in South Africa.

Guesthouse stay
We had an amazing stay at the Gumtree Guesthouse. The owners were very welcoming and helpful in recommending places to visit and restaurants. Our rooms were comfortable and clean and we enjoyed the bar which the owners opened each evening. We would definitely recommend this guesthouse.

The standard of hospitality!!!
My boyfriend and I stayed with Phil and Linda for 4 days while we were visiting my grandpa in Oudtshoorn. We have been to many hotels since we travel a lot from Los Angeles, and I must say I enjoyed this bed and breakfast the most. It was very clean, comfortable, and most importantly very welcoming. The owners Phil and his wife Linda were very hospitable and helped us out from places to eat, visit, and even information to rent a car. AND THE BREAKFAST!! Yum!!! My boyfriend loves their hot breakfast and they were so sweet to accommodate my vegan needs. I consider them to be a great part of our trip. I was really impressed with our stay and would definitely stay with them again!!!

Couldn't find fault!
This was our second visit to the Gumtree and our experience was exactly the same as the first time 3 years ago.the hosts (Phil & Linda) did everything within this powers to make our stay as enjoyable as possible. If we are ever back in Outdtshoorn we will definitely book the Gumtree.

Great breakfast, great bar with excellent prices of drinks, relaxing pool area. Above all our hosts, linda and Phil were helpful, friendly and welcoming. They made us feel like old friends and were on hand with lots of info about the area. We had a great one night stay at the Gumtree Guest House. It's a lovely place. The hosts our really helpful and friendly - and open up a bar for drinks each evening - which was really nice. They also offer loads of advice about restaurants and things to do in the area. Would definitely stay again if we are in the area.

Beautiful guesthouse in a nice park / garden setting with pool and patio. Rooms are nicely decorated. Very friendly and helpful hosts. Enjoyed a glass of (complimentary) local wine. Well situated in center of Outdshoorn. Stay was a highlight of our trip to South Africa - highly recommendable.

Back to boarding school.
The owner of this establishment should not be in the hospitality business. He is a control freak and and this is evidenced by an endless stream of rules and regulations emailed, signposted and supplied in the rooms. The facilities are fine, but I suspect many of the better reviews relate to the earlier owners of this establishment. Innocent transgressions on the part of guests, merit a stream of sarcasm. For myself and two sets of friend visiting RSA from Asia, this was the low point of our two week visit when compared with so many other establishments we stayed in with with warm and friendly hosts.

Hi James, We are sorry you did not enjoy your stay at Gumtree. We are a little bemused by your comments as you had almost nothing to do with Linda or myself so we are unable to comment on how you reached your conclusions, especially the personal remarks. It is a pity you did not come in for breakfast as you chose to sit in your car while your friends ate. We do not know why as nobody said anything to us. For the record, all the reviews for Gumtree GH on this forum (and other well known review forums) have been posted since Linda and I took over Gumtree. Regards, Phil & Linda

This is the spot for a quick stay in this area
Phil is a great host. Gave terrific recommendations for restaurants and things to do and see. Room was adequate - beds were very comfortable and the shower was better than may be expected. TV was the only weak spot but didn't visit to watch TV. Had an amazing, wonderful dinner at the Colony Restaurant in the neat old hotel in the center of town, thanks to Phil. This place is a SUPER GOOD VALUE. Highly recommend.

Staying at Gumtree was one of the highlights of our entire trip to South Africa! Phil and Linda are so friendly and hospitable and really made our stay so great. We really enjoyed chatting with them and enjoying drinks on the deck. They gave us great recommendations for things to do in Oudtshoorn as well as for the remainder of our trip. The property itself is exceptional! The most high quality guest house we have ever stayed in. The rooms are large and comfortable, with great decor. The location is perfect, right in the center of town walking distance to good restaurants which Phil will recommend you. Look no further, this is the best place to stay in Oudtshoorn.

Superb service awaits at The Gumtree, Oudsthoorn
Phil & his wife Linda are supreme professionals and make running the guesthouse look so easy. From my dealings by email to our greeting upon arrival, we felt as if we were in the company of someone who is at the top of their game. The welcome is great, the situation of the guesthouse is greet( almost in town, next to the river, facing the suspension bridge). Our room (number7) overlooks the swimming pool deck area, the river & the bridge and is very quiet. The bedlinen is fab. There are enough sockets in the room for all chargers etc & the tea tray is very much appreciated. A complimentary drink in the tiny bar is a nice touch where you get chance to pick Phil & Linda's brains about tours & places to eat. They even book ahead for you which is another nice touch. Breakfast is a slick operation with Phil overseeing the room and ensuring that you have enough of everything on offer( local cheeses & meats, savoury & sweet preserves). We enjoyed our stay very much and would gladly return.
