Surprisingly nice stay

Posted Jul 21, 2014
Our family stated at the blockade runner in July. We had a surprisingly nice stay. Pros are great location on a clean beach, staff very helpful, amazing breakfast, beautiful lawn, good recommendation for excursions, fish tacos, and clean rooms. Cons are small bathrooms, basic accommodation, and expensive drinks (15 $ for a drink). So overall, it was a great stay and I would definitely return.

Not what we expected

Posted Jul 7, 2014
Pros: The staff was friendly
Cons: Updating the hotel to at least 20th century. It was retro but only because it hasn't been updated since the 70s
Location: Lots to do, Johnny Mercer's pier is within walking distance, so are shops and places to eat.
Very disappointing that it appears to have not been updated in a long time. I had hoped to stay in a nice hotel while at the beach and unfortunately this didn't meet my minimum standards.

Lovely gardens and oceanfront hotel

Employees are attentive and helpful. Restaurant has delicious food. Bed and linens were extremely comfortable. Highly recommend the terrace rooms. Large oceanfront terraces with table & two chairs and a chaise.

Nice, overpriced, not a resort

Posted Jun 23, 2014
This is a nice hotel. It's clean, the rooms are pleasant, and it's close to the beach. But it isn't a resort -- it's jam-packed with kids and families -- and it's overpriced. The Holiday Inn down the street would have been just a relaxing for a fraction of the price.

A wonderful beach resort

Posted Jun 22, 2014
Pros: The room, the overall cleanliness, the helpful, pleasant staff, the great restaurant and the lovely landscaping. It was a relaxing, peaceful stay.
Cons: Offering a variety of different pillows. The pillows were all the same and were quite uncomfortable even though the beds themselves were comfortable.
Location: Wrightsville Beach is clean and lovely. Wilmington is a short drive and offers many historic, scenic attractions, good restaurants and shopping.
The Blockade Runner is a clean, well maintained hotel with lovely views of the ocean and the canal. Our room was spacious, comfortable and attractively decorated. I have multiple allergies, and there were no irritating odors from chemicals, or perfumes in the room or in the bedding. The bed was comfortable, and the room temperature was good, which is often a problem in hotels especially overnight. The beach staff (who rented the chairs and umbrellas) were friendly and helpful, and we had a great meal at the hotel restaurant where they prepared delicious food even with my long list of allergy restrictions. The waitress was great, and the outside dining was lovely with a plethora of different types of trees, plants and flowers to enjoy all around the area. I definitely plan to stay again. The only thing I will be sure to bring with me is some comfortable pillows as theirs were not supportive or comfortable at all.

Real breakfast included and on the beach

Posted Jun 10, 2014
Pros: Breakfast buffets, free parking, spacious rooms, convenient beach access
Location: Everything is in walking distance on the island. The hotel's right on the beach and shops and restaurants are only blocks away.
I stayed here Friday through Monday and really enjoyed my stay. I spent most of my time on the beach, which was super convenient to get to, as the hotel is on the beach. The breakfast buffet was included each day and it was actually substantial, not just stale pastries and juice. Parking was also included which is essential given the limited parking on the "island". The hotel is clearly much older but has been remodeled pretty well. The only negatives were that the bathrooms are a little small and there isn't much sound-proofing. Some of my neighbors got in really late and were talking loudly (and probably drunkenly) down the hall and I could basically hear their entire conversation - it seemed to really echo in the halls. Everything else was just fine.
