“Pleasantly Surprised”
Wonderful hotel. I couldn't believe the rate. I can't recommend the food in the restaurant, but everything else was wonderful.
“Will definitely stay here when in the area again!”
Everything was superb! We missed the time for the cookies and milk due to being away at a show. However, upon our return, there were still cookies available and when I inquired about milk, they hostess promptly went to the kitchen and we were still able to enjoy milk and cookies! The Inn is very quaint with a lot of old charm. It is in great condition and reminded me of my great grandparents. Very charming, clean and well appointed. We would definitely stay here again!
“Interesting Space”
The hotel is a renovated historic cotton mill. The building is very interesting and the rooms are extremely large. The furnishings are rather dreary and feel like they need to be freshened up. The lighting in the rooms is minimal so that the rooms are rather dark. The location of the hotel is wonderful - within walking distance of the Old Salem Historic District and the Strollway. The staff are polite, helpful, and very pleasant. The breakfast that comes with the room was not particularly interesting.
“A bit disappointing”
I have stayed at this hotel numerous times and each time I see it go a bit further down. It needs bathroom renovation and general tweeking up. Mold in bathroom as well as shabby fixtures. Slats in blinds missing or broken. Bedskirts torn or pinned, pillows low quality and breaksfast was minimal. No coffee makers in rooms or ones that are not functioning properly. Staff is as always wonderful and the restaurant was very good. It would take very little to make this hotel wonderful. Replace worn carpets, new bedding ,window treatments, coffee makers, add some hot items to the breakfast and up grade the baths. I would recommend this hotel with reservations now but with the upgrades would even advertise for them.
“Wonderful”
An absolutely wonderful hotel, I felt as if we could have been in 1885, you could almost hear the carriages still roaming the streets of downtown Winston. It was also within walking distance of Old Salem. I would highly recommend The Brookstown Inn
“We always stay at the Brookstown Inn”
We love coming to the Brookstown Inn. A historic, quirky old mill, beautifully renovated, friendly, attentive staff. If you like your hotels homogenous, where you could be in any-city USA, this is not the place for you. If you like brick, and oak beams, and high ceilings, huge windows, come here. Walking distance to downtown and the Arts District and to Salem College, but in its own little village. The hotel is next to a lovely walking/running trail. The adjacent Cotton Mill restaurant is superb. Nearby Ollie's Bakery is heaven.
“Great Price for a great place”
This place has a ton of character. I had a huge room, nicely frnished on the top floor. Very quiet except for the pleasant sound of the rain on the open beamed ceiling. Nice neighborhood with good restaurants and very easy to get to downtown and highways . Friendly staff ,easy parking - I highly recommend this Inn if you are looking for something out of the ordinary.
“great location”
great location and rooms are large and comfortable. The hotel is still great to stay in, but there have been changes since our last stay a year ago in 2010. When we first stayed here in 2010, it was like a bed and breakfast, in that you had a wine and cheese hour in the large room near the checkin. Then you had milk and cookies in the evening, brought over by the restaurant next door. Now, the wine and cheese is in the restaurant, which doesn't lend itself to get to talk to fellow visitors at the Brookstown Inn. And when we asked for milk to go with the cookies, like the brochure says. the person working the desk said she had none and was provided with none. The breakfast provided was heavily laden with pastries, with cereal and juices. We decided to skip the breakfast and go out. Still a nice hotel, but no longer has the feel of bed and breakfast. I would rather they increase the cost of the stay and keep the quality perks provided a year ago.
“first choice in win-sal for value”
nice location and good value
“Interesting Hotel”
We have stayed at the Brookstown Inn in the past. The rooms are really large, unique and appealing. During our most recent stay, however, there were a few problems. When we checked in, our room was not ready, so we went out to lunch. When we returned, my wife went to the assigned room with the key card that we had been given when we first arrived only to find someone else already occupying the room. Both my wife and the occupant were a bit shocked when she entered the room. When I checked with the desk, there was a different clerk, and he indicated that their computer system had gone down, and the room assignments had been lost. In addition, the air conditioning went down a few times on one of the hottest days of the year. All in all, this was not our most satisfying stay there, but will consider it just an aberration caused by the extreme weather conditions for now, and would give it another try, as the physical plant is really appealing.
