“Your best bet in Zacatecas”

Where to start? Right across the cathedral in the very heart of Zacatecas, there is simply no better location in town, period. Everything you'd want to see as a tourist is within walking distance, so you don't need a car (but if you have one, there's a secure garage underneath the hotel itself available). Hotel staff were friendly and efficient. Our room, a standard room, was on the 6th floor and very quiet as it faced the interior courtyard. One of the most comfortable, stylish rooms I've seen, there was plenty of space, a very comfortable bed, a sofa, very high quality toiletries including toothpaste and Alka-Seltzer, and an immaculately clean bathroom and shower with plenty of hot water. Breakfast downstairs included a wide range of options from corn flakes, waffles, and made to order omelets to more traditional Mexican fare: chilaquiles, chicken in mole sauce, quesadillas with squash blossoms, huitlacoche, rajas, or meat; options changed daily. They also had fresh squeeze juices and fruit - the papaya and lime was phenomenally good. The business center in the hotel was able to print out boarding passes at no charge, the front desk found us a taxi to take us to the museum in Guadalupe and back (while waiting for us) at a very reasonable price. Room service pricing was very good with a wide range of options. Only the hotel bar (good snacks, but not particularly appealing) wasn't awesome, but there are plenty of other places to drink nearby (or an Oxxo across the street).

Getting there
As of November 2011, the fixed rate for a taxi from the Zacatecas airport to the center of town was 230 MXN, or about US $17; if you don't have any pesos when you land, don't worry, there's an ATM at the airport. If you're taking the bus into Zacatecas, you should be able to find a taxi from the bus station for around than 50 MXN.
Must see
The museum and convent in the neighboring town of Guadalupe is not to be missed, especially if you're interested in religious art. Founded by Franciscans, the artwork on display is of a quality that I never expected in what was more or less the middle of nowhere in the 1700s (and more or less still is today). I've seen a lot of depictions of the Passion, but seldom one as moving as the one on display there.
Dining
Do book ahead at Los Dorados de Villa for a typically Mexican restaurant with good quality food. For fast and cheap food, check out Gorditas de Doña Julia just down the block from the hotel... or the Oxxo convenience store across the street for cheap beer and snacks. Best of all, however, was a restaurant serving Zacatecan specialties just across from the south side of the Mercado González Ortega, two blocks from the hotel (sorry, I didn't catch the name). It may not look like much, but the asado de boda was phenomal. Look for an awning that says "traditional Zacatecas food" or something like that!

I think this is the best hotel in ZAcatecas. The location can't be better, just in front of the cathedral. the restaurant is awesome, try the arrachera, melted cheese and tortilla soup. You won't regret staying here.

“Great "Location, Location, Location"”

Its been more than ten years that I have been to Zacatecas and I was very pleased with the accomidations. Hotel Emporio is very well kept, I traveled with my 5 yr old son and 7 yr old nephew and the staff there was very nice and accomidating, the bell man was extremely helpful. One quick food recomondation outside of the great food that the hotel provides is just outside of the hotel 5 doors down to the left on the right hand side there is a sit down restaurant with colorful setting you can miss very clean location has the best for the area food in town.... Back to the Hotel it was great and I would recommend this location to anyone going to Zacatecas to stay at Hotel Emporio, I also read the reviews and finally decided to stay and the stay was great well kept and very modern looks like recent updates with all the plasmas in the rooms and bar area.

Area recommendations
You are centraly located to everything out there and the town is known for its mine tour and the cable car tour within 100 yrds from Hotel

“Great deal for an Ideal location”

A very nice room, especially with the city view and balcony. The location in front of the Plaza de Armas is perfect, Any parade, callejoneada or band concert will be within easy view or ear shot of your balcony if you get a room with a city view. Hotel brunch was ok but I'd recommend walking up a block to the Acropolis, amazing chiliquiles. Great staff, most of whom are bilingual which helped. Very affordable to park a car over night and I was definitely impressed with their valet skills, that was a tightly packed garage. Overall, I would stay at the Hotel Emporio again and again. Highly recommended.

Must see
Take a quick taxi up to La Bufa and visit the Museum, see the statues of Pancho and his men then take the Teleferico down to La Mina Eden. La Mina is an almost 400 yr old underground Silver mine from the Spanish Colonial period. Take a tour, be sure to visit the rock & mineral museum inside and then walk down the street past the hospital to catch a cab back into the city. Come back to La Mina at night to check out the Night Club which is inside the Mine. Make sure to take some time to visit the Centro Platero on the outskirts of town near Guadelupe. Here are dozens of artisan shops which specialize in hand crafted silver jewelry. You can watch them work as well. Finally, no trip to Zacatecas would be complete without a callejoneada (a group of people celebrating thrrough the streets with a donkey loaded with Mezcal or tequila and a mariachi band that stop in different plazas to dance) and if you stay at the Emporio you are bound to hear one pass by through the Plaza. Don't be shy, go down and join them in the dancing, singing, yelling and of course Mezcal. This is the real Zacatecano!
Dining
Acropolis is great for breakfast, I recommend the chiliquiles verdes. La Garufa is withink walking distance from the Emporio and it has amazing meat. La Traviata is an Italian place near la Garufa. For a special dinner or a nice brunch I'd recommend La Quinta Real, but it's a bit pricey. For a great deal and the most amazing Zacatecano food you've ever had go to Los Dorados de Villa and make sure you visit the bathroom. Finally, for just a snack or a quick lunch, Las gorditas Doña Julia cannot be beat and there are several around town.

“Great location, comfortable room, service a bit disjointed though.”

Pros - Big, comfortable room and bed. - Large breakfast buffet. - Located right in centre, opposite the cathedral. Cons - Unattentive, impersonal check-in. - Room service food below average. - Room service tried to add tip to my bill (I had given them cash), luckily I noticed at check-out !

“Great ambiance, great location, although we've stayed in the Quinta Real, this is our new favorite.”

This hotel feels like home from the minute one arrives. Friendly and well trained staff are discrete, but don't miss a thing. Offers a good combination of Mexican feel with the services we're used to at home.

Traveler's tip
Great location from which to explore most of the places one would wish to visit in this clean, friendly and interesting city.
