They double charged me for the dinner and charged me ($15) at the time of check-out without providing explanation of charges. The dinner was for $21 but my credit card shows it was charged twice. It was careless of the Africa House Hotel to charge me twice. I tried reaching them but they didn't respond. Please be careful when booking this hotel.

historic colonial building excellent seafront loca
the staff and management are very accomodating, even under challenging circumstances. this is not the ritz carlton or the four seasons, this is a historic colonial building right on the sea front and short walk to everything without being in the overpriced tourist traps like Hyatt. for authentic experience stay in colonial houses like this.

I paid more to get an ocean room view - big mistake. The bar was located above my room which meant loud music until the early house of the morning, followed by staff dragging furniture across the floor to set up for breakfast. Lots of dancing, drunk people, whoo hoo’s - all of which made for an unpleasant experience. 2 nights of very little sleep; I was glad to get out of there.

The sea view rooms are not worth it cause they are located below the restaurant which means you will hear any chair that get moved and the music

Excellent place eventhough building is old compared to price. Just one thing, when u take a shower, do shower inside tube coz outside of tude height is different that water flew to the room.. Others were excellent...thanks a lot for all staff n service..

Everything was beyond perfection. We were kinda complicated before arrival. We kept changing our reservation so many different times, I understand its kinda annoying, if I was in their shoes but they were still nice to us and agreed to change Everytime we phoned them. Come to the day of arrival, it was a happy meeting/feeling. we finally got the chance to meet the manager who we had always communicated with. Furthermore, Superb room with a sea view, restaurant with evening sunset view. breakfast with sea view. Friendly service. Actually, we felt at home the entire stay. In general; Happy Super Service from the top to the bottom.

great view on the sunset bar good service, comfortable rooms You used to be able to order chinese food from the chinese restaurant on the property and have it on the terrace now they changed the rules make you go to the restaurant instead. Bath is set up in a way that you always end up with water all over the bathroom floor if you try and shower

The booing process was smooth. We booked a deluxe room. Upon arrival we were sat down and told the rooms were being renovated, so there was no room available for us. NO EMAIL OR MESSAGE was sent in advance to notify us and we booked way ahead of time. We were offer another hotel, lower class. They took us to see the room, it was dark and smelling of moth balls. There were cockroaches in the lobby. We refused to stay there. After making us wait for a long time we were told that after all the managemnet found us a room. Looked like they overbooked as we got a bigger room than what we paid for. The overall process was very unpleasant, having to fight for what we already paid for and walk over to a different place. The staff was semi pleasant but clearly not happy that we didn't settle. It all smelled a bit fishy, you just had a feeling they were not honest with you. As for the hotel it was decent, but not as nice as described. From the outside on the ocean side it actually looks horribly neglected.The room was clean but smelled a bit, the breakfast was ok. Had to wait a long time. I would not go back to this place. Find something else !

Very disappointing
On arrival I was greeted well at reception and dealt with registration promptly Cases taken up by the porter. I had booked double deluxe but there was nothing deluxe about it.Fairly standard double room.Air con was not working and was not sorted despite telling them. Bathroom was very tired looking and the shower over the bathtub sprayed water into the gap between the bath and the wall leading to a wet floor -dangerous when stepping out of the bath. Really tired and dirty looking basin area. Breakfast in the morning consisted of small selection of fruit.I asked for toast only to be served with mouldy brown bread. As I was in a hurry to attend a meeting I left without an adequate breakfast. The room was changed the following morning and although I had booked for 2 nights I left after the first night.I feel the rate charged does not reflect the quality of the hotel I am a frequent traveller to Zanzibar but will not be staying at Africa House again. I got some semblance of an apology ( going through the motions)

Enjoyed our 3 nights at the Africa House in Stone Town, Zanzibar. The building is quite old and has great old-world décor and atmosphere. There is no elevator, so be ready to climb some stairs. The staff was friendly and accommodating. Location is within walking distance to the beach, shopping, and dining.

LOVED that there is A/C ... staff is AWESOME! The view from the bar is incredible, and they do a fun barbecue at sunset. Very centrally located.

Historical hotel with old world charm and character Excellent central position on Stonetown beacfront. Wonderful bar and outdoor veranda from which to view the sunset and have a relaxing cocktail. Staff friendly and helpful. Lunch tasty and full of flavour. Slightly odd breakfast combinations. Pleasant bedroom, bathroom would benefit from update.

Great location if you don’t mind the noise
The location of the hotel is great - just on the coast of Stone Town, in the very centre. The room was average, and even if it said it was deluxe, there was nothing deluxe about it. It did have a sea view - but also a view on the busy road just in front of the window, so you could hear anyone passing by and talking. During the night it gets horrendous, as it is just 50m away from the biggest clubbing places (Tatu, and some other clubs), from where the really loud banging sounds come through as they mix from two or three clubs, till wee hours. Definitely wouldn’t recommend this if you are in for a good night rest!

Fantastic location
A hotel with lots of character and history, and is actually part of the Stone Town tour by many tour companies, it is therefore a shame that the hotel is not upkept to a high enough standard to really capatalise on the visitors staying at the hotel, but also passing through. The staff are very plesant and do want to provide high quality service, it is therefore a shame that the example of these standards does not come from higher management. E.g. We were located on the second floor of the hotel (no lift) and had two quite heavy suitacases, on checking out, thus walking down the 4 flights of stairs, members of staff kept walking up and down, yet none of them offered to help bring out bags down.

Great location, but many improvements could be mad
Hotel is in a good location, not really good value though and many of the facility components require updating. The 1st floor terrace is a great location to watch sunsets but is let down by a poor bar service. Alcohol is served at London rates and beer is tepid. Not what you want in an African Summer and I stayed there for 5x days to celebrate a wedding !

Good location overlooking the beach in Stone Town
Great location ,but no elevator and lots of stairs so persons with mobility difficulties would be challenged. Staff are very friendly and attentive. Breakfast is good. Terrace overlooking the beach and the sunset is lovely but can be very hot. Drinks and food from the terrace restaurant are very expensive - eat elsewhere.

Past it's due date
The hotel presents itself as tired. We were put on the top floor - no elevator. The four of us travelling together are all 50+ and it was quite strenuous to carry ourselves plus luggage up to the rooms. There is no bellhop service either. Some of our luggage didn't make the flight. We got a call at 11:15pm to announce that it had arrived. We were already asleep and asked if they could hold until the morning, but I understand for security reasons, this was not an option. Therefore, he asked if they could deliver to our room. After much discussion, the front desk said they would try to find someone. After about 15 minutes of waiting, my husband started his way down. He was met by the security guard carrying the luggage half way down. Our friends were most disappointed. They had no shower curtain on dirty tub, and no toilet paper. We quickly ran out of toilet paper ourselves. The towels were grey and showing extreme wear. There were only two bath towels and one face cloth the first day and one bath towel and one hand towel the second. The water heater in the bathroom was rusty. We had the special room with the balcony, but the doors to the balcony are installed incorrectly so that they locked from the outside only. The hotel was probably really nice in it's day. It just needs refreshing. The installation of an elevator would be huge! The sunset bar has a great view but is overpriced. There is a club next door so the thumping of the techno music is loud.

Lovely hotel with good bar/resraurant
The hotel is a beautiful building, with really nice Arabic style rooms. There are two restaurants, and the sunset terrace is lovely at sunset. The breakfast was also good.

Classic elegance
The Africa House is a true safari hotel. It retains the bulletin board for travellers to post messages for friends (pre-internet). There are expansive balconies to have your favorite drink (including Pimms) and watch the harbor and passing scene. Desk staff know all and facilitate your connections. There is no elevator and there are many steps. However, there are lots of pieces of decor to enjoy if you have to pause for a brief rest. Rooms have good AC.

Hotel is in the old city and close to the shopping and restaurants. Staff was helpful . We did all our daily tours with Ahmed whom intereduced by hotel. Hotel terrace has a nice wiev of the ocean. Only negative thing id that the bathrooms are old and need some attention and they must stop using grey towels.

Nice Stay at a Historical Building
This building has alot of history. It used to be a old English club, which, after the 1964 revolution, was converted to a hotel. I like the old arabeque architecture. It is on the shore, but no direct access to the beach. Also many of the rooms do not face seaward. Overall a nice stay.

You can tell that it's old
The bath tubs in the rooms are no longer proper standard, especially when after the shower, the water fills the floor. The neighborhood was quite noisy (including staff/guests) already at 0700 hrs. A lot of tourists from other hotels came to see the sunset from the terrace

Hotel was better than expected, lovely view straight to the water, nice decore, spacious, fan and air con. Tea and coffee in the room and water.
