Alaska Cruises
on Expedia.com
Alaska cruises are the perfect way to see the U.S.’s final frontier, where you can conveniently visit far-flung glaciers, spot whales in the open, and experience different cultures.
Alaska cruise: Explore glaciers and the Inside passage
Cool weather and a chance to see the last frontier make Alaska a perfect family summer cruise or honeymoon getaway. Set sail from the west coast (likely Seattle or Vancouver) and head to Alaska along the Inside Passage. Glacier Bay and Sawyer Glacier offer breathtaking mountain views and wildlife sightings of wolves, bears, and even goats. Cruise lines that specialize in Alaska are Holland America Line and Princess Cruises, with Carnival Cruises, Celebrity Cruise Line, Crystal Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, and Royal Caribbean also heading north.
Alaska cruises: Visit Alaska frontier towns
Alaska cruises stop at various ports depending on itinerary. Juneau is surrounded by natural splendor and offers many whale-watching, fishing, and hiking opportunities (including glacier hiking which combines a helicopter ride with a two-hour glacier hike). Ketchikan is known as one of Alaska’s rainiest towns, but don’t let that stop you from exploring the area’s natural beauty. In Sitka, you can visit tourist attractions such as St. Michael’s Cathedral and the Sitka National Historic Park Visitor Center, with its numerous unique totem poles. Skagway developed during the late 19th century gold rush and many area activities focus on that history, including gold panning at the Gold Rush Trail Camp.
Alaska cruises: Wander the West Coast
Many Alaska cruises leave from Seattle or Vancouver, B.C. and will visit Victoria, B.C. Tourists visiting Seattle should keep in mind that there’s a lot more to this city than the famous Space Needle. Seattle has a lovely waterfront, lined with restaurants and shops, and the indoor/outdoor Pike Place Market offers enough to keep anyone busy for a day. In Vancouver, ships dock in the business/commercial district downtown, making sightseeing easy. Local sites include historic Gastown, Chinatown, and bayside Stanley Park. Hiking and kayaking opportunities are also plentiful. Victoria is a small, picturesque city and a wonderful place for relaxing strolls, shopping, and long lunches at quaint cafés. The city prides itself on culture, and popular activities include visiting one of the many art galleries, touring the colorful 50-acre Butchart Gardens, and having high tea at a swanky hotel.
