Holland America Line is arguably the most historic (its first ship sailed in 1873) and tradition-laden cruise line on the seas today. The line, however, is keeping up with the times, spending millions on the "Signature of Excellence" initiative to enhance the fleet's guest accommodations, public rooms, dining, service, and enrichment programs. Changes include an early embarkation program (allowing guest to board as early as 11 AM); the Culinary Arts Center program, presented by Food & Wine magazine, with cooking demonstrations and classes; tableside service in the Lido Restaurant, the ships' casual dining venue; an expanded Speakers Program; new Greenhouse Spas offering thermal suites and hydro pools; the multi-purpose Explorations Café; 24-hour concierge service for suite guests; and extensive youth programs.
Life Onboard
A defining feature of Holland America's onboard ambience is that, despite the individual decorating themes on its art-filled, colorful ships, there's a pleasant consistency throughout the fleet. Traditions such as afternoon tea, on-ship tennis courts, even a quaint chime to announce dinner, are identical from ship to ship. Main dining rooms still operate on a set schedule, although Holland America has expanded seatings from the traditional two to four. (The ships also feature the Pinnacle Grill, Holland America's signatureand truly excellentalternative dining venue.)
"Signature of Excellence" upgrades have made a Holland America cruise an even more pleasant experience. A higher percentage of oceanview cabins have balconies; cyber cafés offer all-you-can-surf deals; Java Cafés satisfy caffeine cravings; and the Club HAL children's facilities cater to a wider range of ages.
Evening entertainment is fairly understated, consistent with the Holland America experience. The pre-dinner cocktail reception is generally the liveliest time. However, there’s no shortage of entertainment options, from disco dancing in the Crow's Nest, to flicks in the cinema, to Vegas-style revues in the main theater. Also, every voyage features a crew show, where crew members sing and danceand it's always wonderful.
Fellow Passengers
Holland America has long had a reputation for catering to a somewhat tradition-minded crowd. But new upgrades integrating some of the cruise industry's most important new features are making Holland America more appealing than ever to families and younger cruisers.
