Frequently Asked Questions

What are travel protection plans?

You've saved, you've waited, and now you're all set to go on the vacation of your life. Preparing for your vacation should include covering yourself against expenses related to unfortunate occurrences that can interfere with even the best-laid plans. For more information see each BerkelyCare insurance plan or Expedia waiver details page: .. See more
  • Expedia Package Protection Plan—Coverage from the time you book until you return home. For flight + hotel bookings.
  • Expedia Vacation Waiver—Pre-travel protection; change or cancel your trip for any reason. For flight + hotel bookings.
  • Domestic Flight Insurance—Trip cancellation/interruption coverage for covered reasons. For flight bookings within the U.S.
  • International Flight Insurance—Trip cancellation coverage for covered reasons, plus coverage for lost luggage and more. For flight bookings abroad.
  • Cruise Travel Insurance—Trip cancellation coverage due to covered reasons, plus coverage for lost luggage and more. For cruise or cruise + flight bookings.
  • Car Rental Insurance—Coverage in case of damage to your rental car for covered reasons. For car rental bookings.

How much does a travel protection plan typically cost?

Costs vary depending on the plan you want—and the type of trip you’re booking. For example, BerkelyCare’s Domestic Flight Insurance plan can start from just $18 per traveler. Since pricing varies, read the details for each plan to get a better idea of the cost.

What if I have other types of insurance?

Travel protection plans have a wide range of travel benefits which credit card, homeowners, and renters insurance policies often do not offer. Other insurance policies may not offer coverage while you travel due to benefit limits, territory restrictions, and deductibles. Most people don't have any insurance coverage at all if they must cancel their trip, and even if they do, reimbursement for cancellations due to any reason is rare. However, you should review your own policies carefully to see what is covered... See more

Homeowners and renters policies may offer coverage for lost possessions. However, these policies may not fully cover your loss fully due to high deductibles.

The medical coverage included in some travel insurance plans may be valuable for people whose health insurance plans do not pay for covered medical expenses incurred outside of the United States (e.g., Medicare, certain HMOs, etc.). Even if it your insurance does, you may not be covered for the full amount due to deductibles and co-insurance. Plus, many plans do not pay for evacuations, which can be very expensive. In addition, medical plans typically don’t include coverage for trip cancellation.

Many credit cards have only limited coverage and assistance service, with only a few including coverage to reimburse in the event of a trip cancellation or an emergency medical evacuation. Check your credit card documentation carefully.

When can I expect a refund?

Any reimbursements payable by Expedia are typically sent within 7–10 business days. Insurance claims are typically settled within 4–6 weeks by BerkelyCare, although the timeline depends on how quickly you submit your information. Claims are finalized within two business days of receiving all documentation.

Can I get a travel protection plan after I’ve booked my trip?

With the exception of Car Rental Insurance plan, all travel protection plans must be included in the same transaction as the covered travel. The Car Rental Insurance plan can be obtained anytime up to the day prior to your departure.
