What to expect
Mexico’s Caribbean includes four distinct choices: Cancún, a modern resort with plenty of shopping, sightseeing, and dining options; Cozumel, an idyllic Caribbean island famous for day trips and good food; Mérida, a colonial city with easy access to Mayan ruins; and the Riviera Maya, a broad area south of Cancún that includes the village of Playa del Carmen plus newer developments near the area’s eco-parks.
When to go
High season runs mid-December to Easter, plus spring break. Trade winds keep the coast cool during summer, though interior jungles are hot and humid.

  • The area near Mérida is famous for its bird and deer hunting. Hunting season runs from late October through the end of February.
  • Most Cancún resorts offer all-inclusive vacations, which include food, drinks, and activities in one hassle-free rate. Some offer “European plan” (room-only) pricing, too.
