Tourist action is concentrated on the northeastern side of New Providence. If you have time, you can explore the rest of this 7- by 21-mile island in a day, including occasional stops. The terrain is flat, and getting around is easy. Most of the historic sites in Nassau and Paradise Island can be reached on foot or by bicycle, scooter, or horse-drawn carriage.

For getting around the island, a rental car is your best bet -- or pick up a scooter for a more adventurous ride. Either way, drive on the left side of the road.

Pick up a copy of a New Providence map at your hotel desk. Wear comfortable shoes, and try to do most of your walking before the sweltering Bahamian sun reaches its full midday force.
