Kipuka Puaulu
Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park, Mauna Loa Rd., HI, USA

A kipuka is a forested island surrounded by a sea of lava. This unique and diverse 100-acre mesic forest is also known as Bird Park, although its real beauty lies in its rare flora. Native birds, such as the 'apapane and the 'elepaio, call from their hiding places in the thick canopy. A written guide is available at the Kilauea Visitor Center in Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park.
