The main road tracing the island's perimeter takes you past easily explored landscapes and attractions. There are magical mountains, cascading waterfalls, mist-shrouded caves, a fern grotto, and a lighthouse designated a National Historic Landmark. All around the island are highway overlooks where you can take in the view.

Directions on the island are often referred to as mauka (toward the mountains) and makai.
