Shopping is, of course, abundant in the resort areas. Whether you're searching for a dashboard hula dancer or something a little more upmarket, you can probably buy it on Front Street in Lahaina or South Kihei Road in Kihei. But don't miss the great boutiques lining the streets of small towns like Pa'ia and Makawao. You can purchase upscale fashions and art while strolling through these charming, quieter communities.
Local artisans turn out gorgeous work in a range of prices. Special souvenirs include rare hardwood bowls and boxes, prints of sea life, Hawaiian quilts, and specialty food products like Kona coffee. A group that calls itself Made on Maui exists solely to promote the products of its members -- items ranging from pottery and paintings to Hawaiian teas and macadamia caramel corn. You can identify the group by its distinctive Haleakala logo.
Business hours for individual shops on the island are usually 9 to 5, seven days a week. Shopping centers tend to stay open later (until 9 or 10 at least one night of the week).
