There is a wide range of hotel accommodations in Ixtapa and in Zihuatanejo. Pricier Ixtapa has almost exclusively deluxe beachfront properties, and almost all are along the Zona Hotelera, a 3-km (2-mi) stretch of Playa del Palmar. Their quality, however, doesn't always match that of the other properties of international chains whose names they bear. Most of the budget accommodations are in Zihuatanejo, where the best hotels are on or overlooking La Madera or La Ropa beach, and the least expensive are downtown. There are also a few choices in Troncones, a tiny beach about 30 minutes northwest of Zihuatanejo by car.

Most hotels raise their rates for the high season (December 15 through Easter Week). Rates are lowest in May and June, the beginning of the rainy season (which lasts from late May to early October), and in September and October, when hurricanes sweep the coast. They rise somewhat during July and August when most Mexican families take advantage of the warm waters and swarm the beaches for their summer vacations. Expect to pay 25% less during the off-season.
