Audubon House and Gardens
205 Whitehead St., Key West, FL 33040, USA

Phone 305/294-2116

If you've ever seen an engraving by ornithologist John James Audubon, you'll understand why his name is synonymous with birds. You can see his work in this three-story house, which was built in the 1840s for Captain John Geiger, but now commemorates Audubon's 1832 stop in Key West while he was traveling through Florida to study birds. Several rooms of period antiques and a children's room are also of interest. Admission includes an audiotape (in English, French, German, or Spanish) for a self-guided tour of the house and tropical gardens, complemented by an informational booklet and signs that identify the rare indigenous plants and trees. COST: $9.
