Restaurants
Overview

The Toronto restaurant scene is thriving. Even haute cuisine establishments are experiencing a renaissance, joining the ever-swelling ranks of bistros, tapas bars, and ethnic restaurants. Italian restaurants dominate the city's dining scene, but you can get anything from Hungarian schnitzel to Southeast Asian fare. If you're visiting in summer, do as the locals do and dine alfresco.

Smoking is prohibited in most Toronto restaurants. If this is important to you, call to check on the status of the law.

Servers expect 15% tip on the pre-tax bill. An easy formula is GST (7%) plus PST (8%) equals tip (15%). There's no need to tip on the total after-tax bill.

Unless noted below, dress in Toronto is casual but neat. In the more elegant and/or expensive restaurants, men are likely to feel more comfortable wearing a jacket.

Prices are per person for a three-course meal, in Candian dollars. They include tax and service but exclude drinks.
